Sheaffer Cobalt Glow

But I did want to sort of show it off. This is the Cobalt Glow that I purchased from Antonios. my apologies that the handwritten part is uphill... i didn't have a ruling guide under the page. Plus it was written hastily. At any rate... some pics.

Antonios tells me this is a factory nib but that he took the corners off ever so slightly as it came from the factory very sharp. I like it that way and would call it a cursive italic though slightly sharper perhaps than Richard Binder's cursive italic. Definitely wouldn't call it a stub.

Ink used is a blue "dump" ink. I wrote that at the top of the writing sample but it's illegible.

These are just my first impressions and no specifics on dimensions, etc.

I'd say it's a very nice pen for the price. Not easy to find modern 18K nibs below $100 and I have seen these new for under $100. The cap image shows it's colors most accurately and impressively.

I'm leaving this text in just to confuse everyone. But removing the second batch of pics.

These are just my first impressions as I've only had the pen 3 days. All in all, it seems like a very nice pen for the price given a) the nib is quite sharp and Antonios tells me that before he softened the corners ever so slightly, it was exceptionally sharp. Hard to find in a factory italic nib with tipping. B) it's 18K gold nib. I'm more a 14K person but was pleased to find that this nib is not mushy like other 18K nibs I've tried.

The cap image really shows off it's colors most accurately and most impressively. Pics were taken in a cloudy moment, outdoors. Ink is a blue "dump" mix.

sorry for the poor quality handwriting - was rushing it and had no rule guides.

KCat - thanks for sharing. I have one with a fine and enjoy it. I'm considering getting another nib from Sheaffer, probably a stub, but I'll have to wait for the $.

Boy, if that is an example of your poor handwriting, I'd love to see your best! :o Well, then again, maybe I wouldn't!

If I could write, even a little, like that, I don't think I'd go to bed at night. I'd sit up and write all night long!

Nice, rich looking pen, though. Enjoy it! :)

duh... well, that explains what happened to my first effort! I'll delete the one I put in the pen reviews and move this one into that slot.

Leslie - the nib was a factory italic nib. Apparently noted for coming from the factory very sharp to begin with. this is about a 1.1mm line I think. All AZ did was take a tiny bit off of the corners because the original factory nib was so sharp as to be tricky to work with.

does make me very curious about acquiring a factory nib also, though.

ummm... we can.... are you saying you want me to move this post to the general topic I started the other day? or vice versa? doesn't matter to me if you want me to combine them.

I think she means that you posted the exact same post in the general Fountain Pen forum :D

okay - i think i got it.

I deleted the images from the second post but kept the text in. I deleted Leslie's "i commented on this..." post.

Sorry about the confusion. When I posted the first review the system hung up (and I SWEAR to you that I was in the Pen Forum.) All I got was a blank screen and saw no review show up anywhere. At least it's all in one spot now. I've had a few problems today with posting.

That's nice, Roger.

Actually - I do hope to post some italic samples soon. just seems like I can't find the time to sit down and really focus on it. Actually, time isn't the issue. Focus is. I owe several snails but as soon as I sit down it seems like I get distracted by little crud. Things like

"Woof" (translation: let me out, I need to go out, now now now)

and

"Woof Grrrr." (translation: i'm pretending there's something in the yard that I'm protecting you from so you'll give me treat. I want it now now now.)

and last but not least

"whiiiiine, Woof, whiiiine" - you haven't feed me in 3 whole hours.. isn't it dinner-time yet? I want it now now now."

not to mention laundry, dishes, real work, etc. :)

Great looking pen! :D

I am curious, what size nib was this to begin with? By the looks, I am thinking it started out as a broad?

well, you would have to ask Sheaffer. This is a factory nib but I'd guess actually that it started out as a BB. With my "eyeball" measurement, the line with a fairly medium flow ink is 1.1mm. But I don't know how Sheaffer nibs run generally so if their B is broad enough for a 1.1mm nib than ...

btb, the notepad i used here - is a letter-size custom pad that Jimmy Tom did for me a couple of years ago. Back when my M400 blue was the best pen in my "collection" and I was in love with Pelikans.

oh wait, I am still in love with Pelikans! And the 400 is still one of the best in my collection.

Jimmy Tom is our FPN Notepad manufacturer which is why I'm pointing this out.

Hi KCat,

Thanks for sharing! Of course, I had decided not to pursue vintage pens anymore, at least not for the foreseeable future, so why do you have to make me reconsider again? :D  :bonk:

Nice review and pics!

Warm regards, Wim

well, this one isn't vintage... but it does have that lovely vintage Balance look doesn't it?

Hi KCat,

Well, it is quite clear I don't know the least about Sheaffer pens :D. You don't really see them much, over here.

Looks like a vintage pen indeed. And a lovely one for that.

Warm regards, Wim

i don't know much about them either.

i'm not sure why it's a Balance II vs. a Balance unless that was just Sheaffer's way of distinguishing between vintage and modern versions.

I have put a Sheaffer turquiose cartridge in it (just because I couldn't bear a plain ol' blue and already have too many pens inked with Prussian Blue. well, maybe. :)

well, the ink doesn't really suit the pen but it's a nice turquoise as turquoise goes. But i suspect it will be DC blue next. :) DC won't show off the shading.

i do have to use this pens with a rather high angle (compared to my normal). The wide italic is wide enough that you'll get dropout on the sides of the letters if you don't pay attention to angle. But within a couple of brief notes to others I think I've adjusted fully. plus, the ink i had in it might not have had terrific flow - not sure as i don't use that mix often.

  • 11 months later...

We have the Sheaffer Balance Cobalt Glow set with ink and clock on our site for only $65.00. That's a real bargain for an 18K Gold nib pen that's new in the box. I only have 2 nib choices x-fine and Broad. This is one of my all time favorite pens that I just never get tired of using. I just got in the new Sheaffer Valor pen in stock and I may keep one of these for myself.

Cheers!
