Dani Trio Kamakura-Bori ED

What's so good about Dani Trio ? I kept thinking about it.

The ones I like are mostly thick pens. My maximum tolerance of thickness is supposed to be MB 146 or Pelikan M800. How come I could handle the wider girth Dani with no problems and actually like it ?!!

 

I think it's the lighter weight of the superb lacquer work that fooled my brain and hand into accepting the Dani Trio with no fuss. On another thought, maybe it's the nice smooth nib, or the simplicity of the lacquer-work. I am not an Asian art person so it is still mind boggling that I would take in another Dani Trio and love it !!!

 

My first Dani was a Tamenuri -- simple lacquer work in deep burgundy red colors and simple design.

 

A very interesting pen :

1. it's an eye dropper :

I am liking eye dropper a lot lately after I got my Waterman #12 ED in BHR and RMHR.

This Dani is different from the vintage Waterman in that it has a control valve with a turning knob at the barrel end. It is like a piston knob. By turning about 1/8 of a turn, the shut off is released from the feed so that ink will flow into the nib feed. I do not need to turn way off and it is un-noticeable when the knob is turned. I also find that how far I turn the know will determine the flow of my nib but not in a dramatically obvious way because I have yet to be adventurous. I find it fascinating to tinker with the flow = )

 

2. the design is fascinating :

You can actually see the layers of red and black lacquer that were applied onto the barrel as the oval "dimples" reveal them throughout the barrel

 

3. very smooth soft firm 14kt nib :

The nib is quite different from the Fine Flex 18kt nib I got on my Tamenuri. However I like the soft firm nib a lot as compared to a Platinum or Nakaya.

 

4. Measurements:

5 3/4" capped

5/8" inner cap diameter

 

Side Note :

So would I get more Dani Trio ? You bet and I already have one in mind = )

I have wondered about the size and weight. It sounds like it would be heavy. I don't like very large pens but the looks of these do appeal to me as well as the ED concept.

The pen is not anywhere close to heavy IMO. That's why the thickness was not an issue subliminally.

 

Some references from Lightest to heaviest :

-empty M200 Blue swirl w/med platd nib

 

-1/2 filled Kamakura bori w/Montegrappa Blue

-empty w/nib unit Namiki VP almost the same weight (just a tad heavier)

 

-empty M800

 

-empty M450

 

-fully filled Waterman Liaison Brown Ebonite

i don't recall what the 450 is exactly so that may be a stupid question

Dear KCat,

The M450 is tortoise with vermeil cap so the weight is from the metal cap.

 

There is definite conscious cap heaviness of the M450 when holding the M450 on left hand and M800 on right (both capped and empty). I wist I have a scale to be more scientific. But sine I do not, I am going by feel. But it is just a tad not significantly heavier. Sorry for relying on abstracts of "feelings" on this comparison. ; )

 

I do not post my M450 when writing so it will feel just a teeny tad lighter then the Bori if I am to use the pen uncapped.

 

I am surprised that it feels heavier than the M800 given its brass piston.

ah okay - that makes sense. I thought that might be the case since anything short of a metal cap or overlay wouldn't seem like enough to uh.. tip the balance.
