Waterman Allure

My first review. And I think it is the first review of the Allure.

I was in a need for a new, cheap pen so I went to my local dealer. I didn't like the Phileas so he showed me the new Waterman Allure. The first impression was good, the pen is very heavy and looks interesting.

Appearance & Design (8)

As you can see on the pictures, the body looks like marble. I had to choose between a green and red pen, but I was attracted by the red one. The pen is lacquered, so it is very smooth.

Construction & Quality (8)

The pen is very heavy compared to a Pelikan M200 almost the weight of my Lamy Studio, which is made of aluminium.

On the black handle there are two small burrs (correct word?) like on all cheap pens. Overall quality is good.

Weight & Dimensions (9)

Very heavy as I mentioned above, I don't have a weighting machine.

Length: 13,7 cm with cap

12,53 cm without cap

11 mm diameter

Nib & Performance (8)

One thing, why i bought this pen was the nib. My local dealer told me, the nib is a rather high priced nib, which is sold with other pens at a price around 80€. Steel nib. It writes very smooth. Mine is an F nib. Like all my other steel nibs it is rather stiff.

Filling System & Maintenance (9)

Normal waterman cartidge filling system, I bought a converter. (Waterman Florida Blue)

Nothing special here.

Cost & Value (10)

I payed 33€ at my local dealer.

Conclusion (Final score [52/6]: 8,6666)

Would I buy it again? Definitly yes.

I have an older blue one--this is the pen that made me fall in love with fountain pens. Nuff said.

Much Love--Virginia

Thanks for the nice review. I have a blue Allure and a Graduate(basically the same pen with Allure-only the finishing is different, I guess). Glad to see its detailed review on FPN.

I've grown a special love for this pen. (It was a gift from a friend who visited Paris - in my country no penshop deals with 'low-end' lines of Waterman.) A decent writer, quite durable, and the price is reasonable.. and I'm quite satisfied with its looking. :) I even like its heaviness; gives the pen somewhat *serious* feeling, I think..

Because lies sound so nice

and like soil to seed

it goes to casting my fears aside...

Hi, I have a silver Allure, with the exact grip and cap, etc. The only thing I find with this pen is that it stops and needs a little blank writing before the ink comes out. Is this normal?

Got the silver one. It's really good for the price, slim and modern. Nothing to heavy, just everyday use. BUY ONE!

Nice review, nice pen. The price was right. The nibs on these budget modern watermans are quite smooth, whenever i find one cheap, i try to buy it- only fine nibs, because they run wide.

I really prefer the M nib and choose a smoother nib (dip the pen to test it before buy it).
In waterman, lamy, and parker all nib M are differents, so for me I choose a smooth one without baby bottom. I think the quality control is low in all brand. In one box of nibs you have same good and same bad for the same size, but F nibs are mores scratchy in general.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
