Looks like this brand of ink does not get much coverage. I think it has something to do with price for 35ml, which is about 1 ounce.

I was looking for De Atramentis inks in local stores today, and because of your accurate review and your discovery of the waterproof property, I chose Havanna to take home. It really has the colour of Tobaco, while rather on the light side among browns, as your picture shows. They could have called it sepia, if there would not be a De Atramentis Sepia allready. This ink works best in wet broad and italic nibs to compensate for its lightness.

Anyone who has tried these,

I'm looking for a brown. Which do you prefer the De Atramentis Havana or Waterman Havana? I mainly use Fine nib pens.

Thanks

Now there's a nice brown... looks like it could be a gorgeous match with some ivory or cream colored paper. Fantastic shading, and I'm impressed with that waterboarding soak test you gave it.

The color reminds me of a nice warm cup of cocoa, while bundled up in my comfy chair...

Thanks for another fine review!

I haven't filled De Atramentis Havanna into a pen yet, but for fine nibs I prefer inks with clear contrast = darker inks. Waterman Havana is somewhat darker, IMO (I've only ha Havana in cartridges), so better readable with fine nibs - unless you need water resistance.

  • 1 year later...

I just got a bottle of this yesterday, and the color doesn't in any way resemble the brown shade here. Maybe the formulation has changed, or I got a bad bottle? Mine is a distinctly yellow/gold almost mustard color. It has great shading, but I've already got several colors similar to this -- Herbin Ambre de Birmanie, Diamine Sepia, Akkerman Hopjesbruin, etc. I've tried it in several pens of various nib widths, and the color stays the same.

Tortoise,

If you want, I can send you a 5ml sample (free of charge) and you can draft an ink review comparing the two inks. Please PM me your address, if you want my 5ml sample of the De Atramentis Havanna.

I bought some ink from penshop@artbrown.com (Art Brown's Pen Shop in New York City). I got the Vanilla scented variety but it looks like they have a tonne of different inks there. Mmmm. Looking forward to that.

Nice brown with beautiful shading. And waterproof on top of that. Great!

Do you think one could apply watercolors over the drawing with this ink without smearing the line? Would it hold similarly to Platinum's Carbon Black or Sepia? Your soaking test implies so, but I would love some additional details, if possible.

Thank you for another great review!

Hmmm, went to check it out at Goulet's and their sample is MUCH lighter, almost like JH Ambre. Strange.

Your scan is nearer DA Tobacco:

Mine is is the color of a good cigar...a light tan brown....Havana like in the cigars.

It's waiting for some pens to come free. After that I can say more.

Right now I have DA Ocher yellow in a few.

Thats a color that has to settle into my mind. It too gives different shades in different width and flex of nibs. A good substitute for a light orange.

De Atramentis changed their ink formula for the Havanna. The ink review you see here is the old ink formula.

As for the watercolor question, you would need to order a sample from the Goulet pen company to test it for yourself because I'm not an artist. I'm just an amateur calligrapher. :)

Ah, everything makes sense now:-)

Right, that is a sensible answer. But as the new formula seems to light for my purpose, I guess I'll go with Noodler's #41.

Thank you!

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
