Laban Mento

I recently bought a gift for myself. Such a wonderful treat. :) I justify the purchased as "guilt-free splurging."

Nice review.

Looks like a very nice pen.

Thanks for sharing.

Love the ink choice too!

Thank you for your review.

I love the "Mento" size and shape. The pen is a perfect fit in my writing hand. I love them and I am now up to six Mentos. I have both steel and gold nibs and all of them are from the factory. I have not modified any of them, and all of them are writing perfectly.

These pens are very large, and I can see why some people would not like them. Yet, for people who like large pens, they are an ideal goal. I like large pens, and, as I said, I have several and will no doubt collect more. I consider these pens a good value that are very much overlooked.

Great review Signum. How was the Medium nib before it was adjusted to italic? Has it smooth at all or was it scratchy?

dizzypen,

Prior to the adjustment, the medium nib was smooth. It writes like a typical round medium nib. Did you get a scratchy nib?

I noticed the nib is a bit dry. I would need to prime the nib by writing a few strokes on a scrap piece of paper to get the ink flowing again. Did you experience this situation with your Mento as well, dizzypen?

The fine nib I have is a little scratchy so I was thinking of getting the medium nib. Glad to hear it is smooth.

As to the bolded part. I think what you are experiencing is the cap design flaw. The cap is not airtight, so ink dries on the nib very quickly. This is said to lead to hard starts. Someone came up with a fix involving clear nail polish. I don't remember it exactly, but you should be able to find the fix using the search function.

ETA: Ok I think I found the thread click here and scroll down a bit.

I want one at that fire sale price. Sadly, there don't seem to be any. ):

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

FrankB,

I totally agree with you that the Mento is an overlooked fountain pen. The Mento is very good value for the money, especially when you can buy it used. :)

Modifying the nib is a matter of personal taste. As long as we can agree that a fountain pen is better than a say a ballpoint pen or even a rollerball pen, then I'm not going to spend much time arguing over nib preferences.

My first Mento (Tiger Eye pearl) has the same clip design as yours, which lets in too much air where it mounts to the cap. That one dries out very rapidly. I bought a second recently (Tortoise) and Laban has redesigned the way the clip is attached and this new one doesn't dry out as quickly. I love the size and shape of these pens - they are so comfortable to write with.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
