Parker "51" : Double Jewel India Black Gold Filled Set

I've been wanting to do ths review for quite some time now. Actually, since I first got the set several months ago. Of course, life and its various committments and constraints usually get in the way. Well better late than never. This has been my "grail" pen for some time. A grail pen is a pen you long to own, whatever it may be.. Ever since I began following Parker 51s I have wanted a double jewel 51. And for me it wasn't any old 51, I wanted one in excellent shape that I could use on a daily basis. So one day, as chance had it, I came across this set and it was a done deal.

Below is my handwritten assessment of the 51 double jewel set. I can tell you in sum, it is nothing short of spectacular and met all of my expectations. I find all of my 51s to be of exceptional quality, but I will say as you climb the ladder in 51s, I believe their quality increases as well. This set is no exception.

By they way in the process of putting this review together I wound up spilling about 1/3 of my Noodlers Heart of Darkness ( %$%$%$ eyedropper bottle!!!) It's my favorite black, and these reviews aren't easy: So if you like my review and care to sell me some of yours, I'd be greatly indebted. Cheers!

Thank you for the review. Two considerations:

  1.
  2. > it's crazy to consider how high is the price premium for the double jewels. A standard Vacumatic in nice order can be had for 1/3 of the price;
  3. > it's impressive to think that the Parker engineers managed to improve that already big ink capacity with the Aero filling;

Great pen!

Great pen!

Ciao,

Actually you can get most single jewel for under $100. The Aero pens are great. Vacs are great as well. I'm glad you enjoyed my review.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
