Aurora Ipsilon Sterling Silver

I couldn't wait to SHARE my new toy with the rest of my fellow fountain pen aficionados lurking behind a computer monitor or LCD. There were only one Aurora Ipsilon in the pen review index, this pen review will make it the second one. Well, hopefully.

Your pen is a classic and looks like Mr.Binder made another great job.

 

I am just surprised to read that the barrel is not made on silver like the cap. That is strange, do you have any hard evidence for this?

Like Diplomat I am surprised that the barrel is not silver. The sticker you show does not appear to go with your fountain pen.

The price seems awfully low -- pen + tax + Binderizing for $170? I've never seen that pen going for a raw price of much under $200.

Odd... could there be a new "silver cap" model that has a silver-colored metal barrel instead of black plastic?

 

Maybe an expert can shed some light here?

 

Very nice review, Signum; thanks for posting. I've been wanting one of these for a while now, but it makes a big difference to me if the barrel is not sterling.

Hello,

I checked my 2008 Aurora catalogue: the Silver Ipsilon with a metal barrel has the barrel made of Silver (as one would expect...). There are two other models with a black and a red barrel, and a Silver cap only. Maybe you got your pen in a wrong box (and the retailer torn off a part of the box in a tentative to avoid confusion) or the box is made like this to accommodate all the Ipsilon Silver variants.

So, based on Diplomat's comment here and in this thread I'm convinced that the barrel really is silver. Could you be mistaken? Maybe the barrel silver is fairly thin (so it's light in weight?)?

Did you buy the pen new? If so, that's a great price! Mind telling me where you bought it?

I purchased the Ipsilon as a second-hand pen from a pen collector. The Ipsilon was then shipped to Mr. Binder for blessings.

 

Patience is a virtue. Pen collectors feeling the pinch from the recession will sell their pens to finance the purchase of a new pen or to pay their bills. If you're holding cash, you can pick and choose which pen bargain to participate in.

 

I'm reading off the box, it states silver for the cap. I'm assuming the barrel was Chromium because the second line states "finiture cromate." Running the translation through an Italian/English translator, like http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_txt, "finiture cromate" translates to "chromium plated finishes." The only other way to test the barrel is for me to bring the pen to a jeweler, so that the jeweler can apply an acid to the barrel and scratch it off a black stone to test the metal's authenticity, which is not something I'm willing to do at this point.

 

The pictures for this Aurora Ipsilon Sterling Silver is too well done. Check the photos on eBay to my photo and you'll can see that my photos are not whitish.

I don't blame you but I think a jeweler could determine if it's silver in a non-destructive way. I'm guessing here...

 

The box also says "Ballpoint pen..." We know it's not that.

 

But, no matter; you made a fine deal that you're happy with. I imagine you're extremely pleased.

(I'm pretty sure I will be too... once I get my hands on one.)

Have an Aurora Ipsilon in sterling silver, and have checked hallmarks. The hallmark is only on the cap but not on the barrel. However, looking closely and through an eye-loop the colour is exactly identical and the metal on the barrel is quite soft (identical to silver), as the barrel mark (I normally post all my fountain pens, where possible) is present on the barrel. And it tarnishes exactly like the cap as sterling silver does. So I would tend to agree that the barrel on this Aurora is also sterling silver. I love my Aurora Ipsilon and have to agree that it is very well constructed and fine writer.

Following my previous post I can safely confirm from Aurora website that the cap, as well as the barrel, on the Aurora Ipsilon are both sterling silver. The site states clearly: "Cap and barrel in silver 925 Linear pattern Black lacquer ring Fountain pen with nib and chrome plated trims"
