Good, solid review for a good, solid pen.

Keep on workin' on, Henry Louise. Thanks for adding so much to our forum.

Enjoy,

Yours,
Randal

From a person's actions, we may infer attitudes, beliefs, --- and values. We do not know these characteristics outright. The human dichotomies of trust and distrust, honor and duplicity, love and hate --- all depend on internal states we cannot directly experience. Isn't this what adds zest to our life?

Good review. What ink do you have in it? I had my Vista stained by Legal Blue- the ink worked its way into the interior of the cap where I couldn't even try to clean it out. However, the pen does write reliably and pleasantly.

Cool picture! I love the clip on the Safari-style pens.

I believe I inked it with PR DC Supershow at the time of that photo taking. I usually have Diamine Majestic blue or PR DCSSB in it. When I had BSB in my previous vista it stained the feed.

Great review, Henry. :) I really love the pictures, and am a fan of the Vista myself. :( Unfortunately, after... (dare I confess?) about a week of ownership, somebody at work had stolen it from me. I was VERY sad since I had been eyeballing it for so long, special ordered it in EF, waited 2 weeks for its arrival, just to have it taken away a week later. I don't think I want to trust myself with another Vista for a while... I will want a replacement before my fall semester of school starts, but not quite yet... I'm still kind of hopeful that eventually it will find my way back. if not, whoever's got it has a pretty nice pen in their hands. Instead I have a couple of Parker Vectors and Heroes to play with. Anyway, great review and pictures. By the way, are you using a DSLR or just a very high MP digital camera?

It's a Canon SX100IS. I don't have enough money for a good SLR although my dad and cousin love photos....

Henry, thanks for this very thoughtful review. I like your photographs as well, and got a kick out of seeing the Vista clipped to a branch alongside a Parker 51. :) Also, we had only one other review of the Vista, so it's great to have another (I know they're pretty much a 'demonstrator' version of the Safari, but it's a beautiful visual motif).

hehe... it was a hero 616, actually. I went to a pioneer village and I only took those pens.

Yes, That's why I put up another review, because I was looking for one before I bought mine. So I bit the bullet on this one, really.

I have a vista and I think it's great. It's very interesting even by fountain pen standards, and even more so because no one uses fountain pens here. Does the section of yours always appear that way? As in, with the ink appearing solid. In mine (usually inked with visconti blue) I can see the "fins" of the feed (I'm not sure if that's the proper word).

I think I pulled the clip out a bit too far at one point, and there is visible damage inside the top of the cap where the clip is. A small complaint I'd have is that I don't like the pressure you need to put the cap on, I find it a bit too light. Also, since it's no longer as shiny and flawless as it once was, it's just not as nice to look at anymore. It still writes super smooth though.

I like to saturate the feed, because it gets dry sometimes. Twisting the converter until ink is just about to come out of the hole underneath the nib.

  • 1 month later...

So, here's a question I can't seem to find...

I have a Vista and am using the Noodler Whaler's Sepia, and ink has SOMEHOW gotten between the inner and outer cap. I can't figure out how to get the ink out. Soaking it just rewets the ink. Sigh.

Any ideas?

The only thing I can think of is to unscrew the black plug at the top of the cap using the cross shaped slot. This will then let you withdraw the inner cap. Thoroughly clean it and re-assemble the pen. This review shows one disassembled: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...showtopic=90367 and should give you the confidence to try it.

Regards,

Richard.

great review! and nice photos too

the vista though may sound more IT reminds me of the jellyfish Swatch watches - the transparent case tends to yellow in time not to mention that cracks are highly visible.

is it possible to get a vista with calligraphy nib instead?

oooops, i just saw a thread " Review of a Lamy Vista with a 1.1i nib". sorry

Hello, Richard. The Safari/Vista with italic nib is an excellent intro to writing with something other than conventional f/m/b nibs. You will particularly enjoy, I think, using the italic nib with inks that have strong shading characteristics. :cloud9:

Note particularly the advice proffered by HenryLouis 'to saturate the feed, because it gets dry sometimes. Twisting the converter until ink is just about to come out of the hole underneath the nib.' I live in a dry climate and this exercise is often necessary when starting up after a day or two off.

Nice review and pics, Henry-Louis.

My Lamy Vista is a staple in my rotation and has a special place in my heart because it reignited my love for fountain pens.

Wonderful review! Your photographs are breathtaking! Good Job. I have a blue lamy cartridge in mine and I have not written with it for several days. After reading the responses to your review, I noticed that the ink from the cartridge has seeped to threads towards the nib beyond the cartridge itself. I hope I won't have any problems when it comes to cleaning it. I am probably not going to use it as much as the others. Thanks for the review. I am now about to drop a check for the red one with an extra fine nib. So far, this is what I have acquired:

Lamy Vista

Lamy Limited Edition 2005 blue with red clip

Lamy raspberry Safari

Lamy Charcoal

Lamy Lime green

Lamy pink

Lamy red on its way as soon as the check clears.

I believe for this year I am through.

Thanks again for the review!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
