Sailor 1911 Naginata Togi Black & Rhodium Trim MF Nib

I had found the numerous fountain pen reviews in FPN to be immensely helpful in helping me make up my mind on the choices of my 2nd and 3rd FP. Having benefited much from the many reviews which had been openly shared with all on FPN, I feel obliged to pay my tribute, hence this review of my 3rd acquisition.

Having read so much about the Sailor’s nibs and their huge following, I could resist the temptation no longer, and predictably, placed an order for the Naginata Togi series and settled for the MF nib.

Appearance & Design (1-10/10) – 7/10

The dusty looking FedEx package was resting on the table when I got home on a Thursday evening….Fast forward to the point when I lifted up the box cover for the first time, I was pretty sure my heartbeat didn’t skip a beat. After all I wasn’t really expecting to be WOWED by the appearance of my new acquisition. It was a decent black pen with silver trims, a very classic look about the pen’s appearance that suggests Sailor came from a long way back. Simply put, it was truly a neat and tidy looking pen.

Weight & Dimensions (1-10/10) – 6/10

When I first held the pen in my hands, it felt very light. Since I have a pair of heavy hands, I was hoping it will weigh a wee bit heavier. This was quite a departure from the heavier Montblanc Cool Blue Starwalker which I have got accustomed to as my daily writer. As for the ergonomics, the pen felt right in my hands, though I wouldn’t mind a thicker barrel.

Nib (1-10/10) – 9/10

I was greeted by the gleaming silver of the Naginata Togi Nib when I unscrewed the cap for the 1st time. What a sight to behold! :notworthy1: :notworthy1: :notworthy1: I was enthralled for quite a while as I pore over the details of the 21K gold nib, the engravings etched on the nib surface, the “naginata” tip and the length of the tip itself since it was supposedly longer than regular nib tips. Beautiful nib I thought, but I was wondering whether it will write as beautiful as it looks.

Filling System (1-10/10) – 7/10

This pen uses the standard cartridge converter refilling system. Since I was using cartridges all this while prior to getting my hands on this pen, I decided to use the converter and attempted my 1st filling using the Sailor Kiwa guro ink which was acquired along with the pen. It was an enjoyable experience even though I stained my fingers during my maiden attempt. Having the converter simply means I have unlimited choices when it comes to inks, especially those dark black inks.

Nib Performance (1-10/10) - 10/10

I had my first education regarding ink-flow when I put the nib to test. The nib starts the moment it contacts with paper for the 1st time. Smooooooooooth…like butter, and I had to stay ahead and think very hard about what I want to write just to keep up with the smooth ink flow of the nib.. I must confess it was the smoothest writer that I had ever laid my hands on, a real departure from all the pens which I had worked with before. From that moment, I was initiated into the ranks of Sailor converts.

Cost & Value (1-10/10) – 8/10 I would urge anyone to go for this pen if you can spare the budget. However, do use this pen as a daily writer, since the real appeal of this pen is the Naginata Togi nib and not it’s aesthetics.

Conclusion (Final score, x/6) – 5.5/6

I will definitely be using this pen as my daily workhorse writer, rotating it with my MB Cool Blue Starwalker. I had bought this pen with expectations that it will be a smooth writer, but what this pen has to offer in terms of smooth writing is at least one notch higher than my initial expectations. :cloud9:

Good review of a very nice pen which writes wonderfully! Congratulations!

In your writing sample I can see the very good inkflow that lays down constant solid lines...very nice.

Hi archie001, thanks for your kind comments. Yes, this is really a wet pup :clap1: ....It's a pity the pictures which I had uploaded doesn't turn out nicely, though they look just fine when viewing in my PC. Is there a correct way to upload pics?

I have pretty much the same pen, but in a B. The differences are that mine is a "Profit" and has a useless trim ring around the section just waiting to corrode.

I tried a bunch of pens the day i got it. It was head and shoulders above the rest, so i went home with it.

I have found your pleasant experience typical of Japanese makers. Other manufacturers could learn a lot from them.

Thanks

Nice review. I had a similar experience when I got my 1911 with an Extra Fine nib. Sailor probably makes the best contemporary nibs. The great thing about this pen is that you can use it as a workhorse, and it will not show wear. I just wished that they had a piston filler model.

I had been using my new pen for close to a week now and it's a pure joy to write with it. Just placed a bid yesterday on ebay for the same pen with gold trim.... :yikes: What had got into my head?

Have the same pen & nib, but in 'gold'. Still dislike its attempt to look like an MB. However, it is a very good pen, indeed, that is comfortable to use for long & frequent work. The nib is more than just polished: the Naginata Togi profile makes it dynamic and interesting. Definitely recommended.

OK, I'm totally bummed out. I got my Sailor 1911 at Christmas and maybe it's because I got a Fine nib, but I find it really scratchy. Nothing like my Waterman pens. In fact nothing like any of my other pens. Is it because I got a fine nib? It's a lot finer than I expected, I admit. I'm looking to replace the nib, but so far I can't find a place to do it. Any suggestions Sailor Lovers? :crybaby:

Nice review.

Your Naginata Togi MF nib seems to write a much thinker line than my 14k Sapporo MF nib.

Did you applied pressure when writing ?

No, I don't think I apply that much pressure during writing. The reason behind the thicker line could very well be the amazing inkflow properties the Naginata Togi nib is supposed to have, since the togi nib is longer than the usual Sailor 21k Nib. The Sailor Kiwaguro ink may have a part to play as well.

Thanks for your review!

Do you mean that the MF of 21K nib is really thicker than MF nib of 14K? and that's because the inkflow properties is so good ?

but how much is the MF nib 14k thinner than the MF nib 21K ?

I want to buy the 14K nib of sailor. THanks for your answer!

The Sailor fine is superfine by american/european standards (look at nibs.com nib size chart).. You cannot swap the nib or buy one in the USA or Japan. Sailor broad may be what you want. I can't write at all with that fine (I have a medium sized 1911 with a 14kt fine) and it is unclear what I will do with it, maybe sell it.

The Togi works best for me, but be careful the Togi MF already puts down a broadish line and medium in that may be too much for you. Different from the base 191118 k nibs.

You can buy 1911's with all those nibs and some insanely expensive fancier ones from Melpens on ebay, some from Engeika on ebay.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
