Pelikan Toledo Designs

I understand that the gold vs silver Pelikan Toledo binds feature different designs. Could somebody clarify what exactly the differences are? The image from pentrace above is the only one I have found of the two versions side by side, but it does not show all sides of the pens. If anybody has an image of the binds unrolled, that would be wonderful. Also, do the M7XX Toledos feature different bind designs than the M9XX models, or are the latter just enlarged versions of the same design?

Thanks!

I was looking at some M900 series not too long ago. There are a couple of photos at nibs.com showing the images on the silver binds unrolled on the yellow Toledo.

http://www.nibs.com/PelikanM910ToledoYellow.htm

The images look to be similar to that of the red Toledo also with silver binds. There are two images - one shows a stylized pelican with its lower mandible opening wide ostensibly feeding; the other shows an adult pelican with unfurled wings and chick.

The gold binds on the gold M900 have somewhat different images - one shows a stylized pelican grooming? And the other shows two pelicans – I’m guessing they’re an adult and a chick but their physical sizes look similar so I’m not sure what to make of that.

Nibs.com and Pensinasia both have good shots of the binds:

Judging from photos only, the M700 series looks to have enlarged version of the same images, but I can't be sure. I think the images on the silver version look better, but YMMV. By the way, not sure if you or anyone may be interested in the yellow Toledo, but I know who has a fantastic deal going right now cos’ I just got one, wee!

Thanks for the links to those close-ups.

So it looks like the gold version has:

- one panel with a single pelican sleeping, beak closed

- one panel with an adult pelican and a young pelican

- and a lined square decorative border

whereas the silver version has:

- one panel with a single pelican opening its beak

- one panel with an adult pelican feeding a baby pelican

- and a squared circle decorative border

Here are some side by side images for others who may find this helpful!

  • 2 weeks later...

... Okay, I finally found and ordered one of these: the discontinued M710! That's the small, black and silver one. I should receive it next week and can't wait! Anybody has this model? I believe the last year it was produced was 1997, but I could be wrong.

For a while, I had all four of the pre-1997 models (700, 710, 900. 910.) The 710 is a nice pen- not too big, but with decent heft. I have since sold off all but the 910, which is my favorite of the four.

Best regards, greg

Four? That's a lot of Toledos, very cool. In the end, I decided that X10 -- the silver design -- is my favourite as well. The gold version has a matte clip, which I was not crazy about once I saw it in person.

Well, when I started collecting, it was mostly modern Pelikans, and I had the idea that I could collect one of every model. Fortunately, I found vintage pens and quickly realized that I couldn't collect everything.

I didn't care for the matte 700 clip and cap bands either. At first, I thought it was a defect, actually.

Not only do the 9XX and 7XXs look different (the 9ers being larger than the 7ers and having different ring looks as re gold or silver on the cap bottoms and section bottoms)...

... BUT MOST IMPORTANT (for me)...

the 7ers weigh "only" 23 g while the 9ers weigh in at 40g. Get a hold of that!

Well, as the day when I receive my M710 gets closer and closer, I am beginning to hallucinate about it, so I am not sure which parts of what I am remembering are accurate an which are fantasy (I saw it at the NY/NJ show, did not buy it then, but contacted the seller later and now he is sending it to me).

I remember the M710 being surprisingly small and delicate looking -- M215 size -- but hefty. I also remember there being a distinct blue-gray tint to the background of the silver (the negative space). Well, I guess I will wait and see!

Yes, the 710 is the "old 600 size," and smaller than most people expect (especially next to a 910.)

I don't have the 710 any more, but here is a pic compared to an older M200.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
