Bordeaux Red - De Atramentis

De Atramentis is german manufacturer of calligraphy and writing ink. The inks are hand made (the entire production process is done manually in their manufacturing center) by i's founder - Dr. Franz-Josef Jensen. I believe he uses high quality dyes from well established European companies like BASF and Bayer.

De Atramentis offers a variety of "traditional" fountain pen inks and a broad selection of special and scented inks. I believe they should get more attention as the quality od these fluids is very good and some colors are simply stunning.

Bordeaux red is rather decent ink with good properties however it's not stunning. And as I'm biased and try a lot of inks I look for these that will make me say WOW.This makes me say: "nice" and nice is too little once you've tried 300 - 400 inks.

Are you using a firm nib? I have a bottle of Bordeaux Red too but it doesn't come out as dark red like yours. More like the diluted red colour of "1s, 5s, 10s, 15s" smudge.

Well - it's regular Pilot Custom Heritage M nib.

PS: it's cool to look at our flags one above the other :)

Mine is M nib too. Well, perhaps my pen writes drier than yours.

Right! I didn't notice our flags are upside-down. :D

Sunfly, the Bordeaux wasn't as bright as the Merlot, in my experience.

Vis, thanks for another wonderful review!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

@Amberleadavis: I don't have Merlot so I'm not sure how it looks like compared to Bordeaux Red, but I just got my flex pen and it does write darker (like the photos in the review) than my Parker M nib. So... perhaps my M nib is drier?

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
