Athena Eternal Blue

On my hunt for more Sailor inks, I read about a store called Maruzen that gets Sailor to make them inks, which they brand as Athena inks. I have three and there are three more on the way, so here's my first review.

Some of you might remember that my signature used to contain an image of the word "you" written in the prettiest ink ever made. I got a lot of PMs about what ink it was, and was always sad to tell people that it was Yama-dori, a Sailor seasonal ink that claims the title of my FAVOURITE INK OF ALL TIME.

This ink reminds me of Yama-dori a lot. I will have to do a comparison to be sure about how close it is in terms of colour, but the feel of this ink, the impression it leaves you with after reading some text, it's Yama-dori all over. Which of course I find thrilling. :D

I am a sucker for complicated blue-greens, and this ink fits the bill perfectly. Like Caribbean Sea by Caran d'Ache, it shifts from green to blue, from one moment to the next.

The shading is great on all papers, as is performance.

Check out this sample on TR paper. See what I mean by complicated?

I have a bunch more photos in this album here, with close ups of the shading and sheen, for those interested in such things. :)

Reminds me a bit of Diamine Twilight or perhaps R&K Verdigris. Maybe.

Thank you again. Great review.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

  • 4 weeks later...

Ask cool-japan, the guy who sells all the Kobe inks. That's how I got mine. I also heard that some people got theirs from White Rabbit, but I did some comparisons, and it is only cheaper if you are buying over 4 bottles all from one location (ie. all Maruzen inks, you can't mix and match Kobe and Maruzen).

Funny (again, not all that hilarious) but after one month I think that ink is starting to grow on me. There's maybe enough brown in it to hide the green. In any case, there is something eternal about that colour.

Also, I think everyone who wants to get any Maruzen inks because of reviews that I did should consider going with Atsu. I heard about the inks online and saw a swab of one, but I couldn't get any more information online about these inks. Maruzen said they didn't have an online area to show which inks they had and what colour they were. Atsu actually WENT to the store and took pictures of all the inks for me, then made a collage (pdf) that he sent me to help me choose which colours I wanted. I stuck with him for all the Maruzen inks I wanted, because he really did go above and beyond for me in that regard.

I did find it a bit harder to get out of my pen than some other Sailor inks, but not harder than a lot of non-Sailor inks. Let's just say that I left my TWSBI demo soaking with water in it overnight and by the morning, one flush is all it took to get it perfectly clean. No residual staining.

nice! thanks Saskia. I ordered a bottle last night. Excited to try it after a very disappointing experience with Graf Von Faber Castell's new cobalt blue.

How does this compare to Sei Boku?

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
