Show Your Treasure Boxes

I love writing slopes (and use one now and again). I had some made because I couldn't afford the antiques. I hope you like my boxes, and would love to see others post photos of their, antique or new, manufactured or handmade or repurposed, writing or book or pen boxes!

I'll start with a couple of artist's shots, then my own. :)

I don't have my own photos for this first, the box is in storage at the moment:

Poplar writing slope, which I finished myself and tried to "distress" to make it look old. I think I succeeded to some extent:

Thanks! The company who made my boxes for me was really patient with me. They'd not seen slopes before, and it was a real challenge. Now, they specialize in these boxes. They are very good at what they do, and are creating the antiques of tomorrow.

nice design!

I call this box the Twain Collection Box. I had it made to house a collection of Mark Twain paraphernalia for a gift for a friend getting his doctorate, and Twain is his favorite author. The box was designed to hold an assortment of items, and a drawer just for a 1st edition copy of "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" (which had additional meaning, as well). I'm posting my original design ideas, which resulted in the finished product with only minor dimension changes. The easel lid is one of my favorite design ideas, the box on a standard table top holds a book at eye level. I also added a fitted piece of hardboard I covered with smooth goat leather on one side and faux, more textured, leather on the other for use as a portable writing surface for multiple tools (ballpoint as well as fountain pen). The box can also double as a valet or dresser box.

All of these are beautiful. They look really comfortable to write on. I can imagine the (felt?) 'padding' makes writing a joy. However, could you upload some pictures with a scale reference (maybe a ruler?)? I wonder where your elbows go for support when you write on these. How does that work? Or are they wider than I'm imagining?

Hm, good questions. I'll see what I can do, the pictures I posted are a few years old.

I have very large hands and arms, but my main concern with the slopes was where my wrist would fall, if writing near the bottom of a page. It's harder to work with slopes, sometimes, because of my size. I also tend to lean over my work, and slopes make me sit back and try to posture better.

The writing surfaces of my slopes are leather, and very much a nice feel when using a fountain pen. I like the antique blue surface a lot, being it is completely smooth. The black leather surface has a texture, but it really isn't noticeable at all when I write with a good fountain pen that does most of the work for me. I forbid the use of anything but fountain pens with my slopes. (Not that I would ever lend one out...) :)

Hi, Vera.

Thank you for the nice comments.

The slopes and boxes all came from a specialty box maker at The Writing Slope (formerly AzWoodman - same wonderful folks, new specialty). They also make a simpler slant front Lap Desk.

My medieval style leather journals all come from Renaissance Art.

Lovely slope and a beautiful notebook. may I ask where that is from Kiavonne? thanks Vera

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
