Waterman South Seas Blue

People talk about this ink all the time, so I was really curious about what the fuss was all about.

I do like it, it's a nice colour.

It looks great on Rhodia and CF paper ...

... and has nice shading.

Overall it is a nice ink and I do like it, but I generally prefer something with more of a "wow!" factor.

Diamine Asa or Mediterranean Blues would suit me better. Also, I've a bottle of Kon-Peki if needed. Think I'll stick to them. Obviously your review is fine but just not my colour.

I've always liked this one and use it a lot . I agree , "it's a solid turquoise", but I also like the fact that it's not too bright and gaudy . Thanks for the review .

SSB or whatever it is now (Inspired Blue, I think?) was my first full bottle ink purchase so I think I'm emotionally attached.

My first 'fancy' ink too.

So what turquoises do you use with more shading.

Always interested in major shading.

Private Reserve Daphne blue is a close match to South Sea Blue

I've used this ink for years with no problems and still love it. It's my standard for turquoise. I'm not happy with the name change by Waterman for this ink, however!

Hi,

Thanks for yet another great Review!

This is one of those inks that somehow falls just short of what I like in a Turquoise ink. It must be that I fell in love with Sheaffer Skrip Turquoise first, so the bar was set very high. A bit too high for Waterman it seems.

Bye,

S1

EDIT - to add: I l♡ve to receive letters written with this ink!!

I'm split, too. I also find that a bit of pizzazz is missing somewhere, but I still find it fascinating to use it (every now and then) simply because it reminds me of my primary school days back in the 50s. Unfortunately, we never experienced so much shading in those days.

The second bottle of ink I ever purchased after Waterman Florida Blue was South Seas blue. It's a very pretty color but at the time it didn't fit my writing needs. I was thinking the other day that for a person that wasn't a big fan of turquoise inks I sure had quite a few bottles! When my wife came home from a trip and gave me my new favorite pen (Opera Master size special edition Typhoon) I searched my ink shelf for an ink that looked like it fit with the light blue shading in the Typhoon blue coloring of this pen. It hit me that way back in the shelf, unused for better than 5+ years was this nearly full bottle of Waterman SSB. It was perfect and I have really enjoyed using it this week. So your review is very timely and much enjoyed!

I love this ink and pretty much every turquoise I can get my hands on. Brightens my mood without fail. And the name, South Seas Blue, conveys such warmth and light. "Inspired" Blue? To do what? Rename a line of fountain pen inks? Pfft!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
