post-105060-0-45487600-1372870542_thumb.jpgI recently received a gift of a Waterman Ideal pen and am curious as to provenance. The nib says "WATERMAN IDEAL PARIS 18K 750 MADE IN FRANCE". The black body is imbedded with what appears to be specks of gold leaf. Attached are some amateur photos. thanks for any help. Jen

it is a waterman gentleman...

and i am not sure but i am guessing that it is not gold flecs but brass underneath the lacquer.

doesn't look like it...if it would have been maki it would have been a fine powder sprinkled in a pattern.

if it had been gold foil in lacquer(like in cross townsend jade or lapis )...it would be more properly distributed throughout the body of the pen.

Perhaps some of the regulars in the Waterman subforum know more about this.

The placements of these flecks do not suggest paint/lacquer coming off.....

A better focussed pic and from more directions would help also.

That is odd.

I'm wondering if you are seeing "brassing" that's been covered up with some type of clear finish to keep it from turning green.

In the Waterman subforum a ballpoint just like this one is called Maki-E.

So apparently the effect is entended. Don't know if it is Urushilacquer, though.

The EBay listing for the ballpoint states that the "finish has probably been made by Sailor around 1988 for Waterman and probably less than 100 pieces have been made" Can someone help me research "sailor" to see what else I can learn ...Is Sailor a person or another pen company and how can I learn more about him or it??..thanks to all...I am enjoying this mystery...Jen

Sailor is a renowned Japanese pen manufacturer that is famous for Urushi lacquer pens an special developed nibs in high gold content. See the Japanese sub-forum.

Shoot those pics to Mike Masuyama and tell him you suspect a collaboration with Sailor. Ask him if he knows anything

about them.

That's what I'D Do.

[EDIT] Just for grins and giggles shoot the same to Bob Speer (Speerbob).

The Waterman Gentleman is a nice pen to write with but has a seventies style & slimness to it. I had one and mine had developed corrosion in some of the metal connections somewhere along the way. Fountain pens can get wet and, apparently, these are not fabricated with componants that are ideally suited to that condition.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
