Hi KCat,

Thank you for the review!

I must admit, I am a fan of Waterman inks. They are very consistent, flow well, and lubricate well, as you noted.

The only reason I would use Noodler's Red Black rather than this ink is because Havana is so consistent it gets a little boring occasionally :D. It is clear to me that it is difficult to get decent shading with brown inks, but Red Black does manage that better than this ink :D.

Kind regards, Wim

I will have to decide at some point because I liked both but they are close enough not to want to have both. Some of my other browns are running out and I doubt I'll replace them. But I can see getting this ink or a bottle of Red-Black. I like the ever-so-slightly redder look of the Red-black (and as you pointed out, more variation in tone) but I do like the flow of the Havana a lot. Still, the pen the RB is in is quite dry compared to mose of my pens so I'll have to judge RB flow in my Esterbrook somewhere down the line.

I bought a bottle of this ink a few years ago, and used it in a no-name wooden pen because I wasn't sure if I would like it. Much to my initial surprise, I really liked the appearance of the ink, and have been using it ever since.

I now have it in the Parker 75. Think I'll use it tonight.

I don't have a lot of experience with different brands of ink. I'm currently using Waterman, Herbin, and Noodlers. I have some Aurora but haven't inked a pen with it yet.

I find that Waterman flows better than Noodlers; The Herbin also seems to put down a good wet line.

My havana brown is a mutating ink. It becomes sludge in the pen. Flushing it out of a pen I've seen concentrations of green and pink. I don't know if it's a bad bottle or not. It looks like the colour in the scan here. It just has a tendency to become sludgy when in a pen. The ink in the bottle looks fine.

Hi,

Kcat, is it possible for you to do the paper towel, ink dot, and water trick to find out what colors are mixed to make the brown? It could help us find out what this pink and green is all about.

Leslie J, what is the pen you are using with the Havana? Havana might be chemically reacting to the residue of other inks that used to be in your pen.

Hi,

Maybe we should all post results of our inks and this treatment.

By the way, Pelikan Turquoise does not come apart which show that it is only one color.

Per Dillon's request...

I probably could have done a better job - like dipping it and holding it vertically or something... i dunno.

but here is WM Havana separated on a coffee filter (paper towel and tissue weren't much better)

Hi,

That reminds me that my formula for brown was to mix blue, red and yellow Crayola markers together.

Hi KCat,

Those paper towel Rorschach tests are amazing. Who knew that one ink could have so many colours. I have been aware of Black Quink having a purplish tinge to it, but this is incredible.

While I was looking at the WHB my SO walked into the room and stared at the monitor. I had to confess what it was. She just walked away shaking her head.

I do appreciate the effort K :meow:

Very interesting :bunny1: :bunny1: :bunny1:

I wonder what comprises that black, though...

Dillon :D

Okay, okay! :P The bottle appears to be dusty. Now what? There is no SITB or separation of any kind. I did an ink blot test, and got the same result as KCat, brown with blue and green tinged edges. When I went to rinse off the dip pen however, tiny bits of coloured "debris" separated in the sink: green, brown, blue. I think that's just the way Havana is, and that's why I'm careful which pen I'd use it in. Or at least, that's the way my Havana ink behaves, and that fact makes it unlikely for me to want to try another bottle. :)

i would like to try a brown as my first venture outside of my florida blue, the only ink i have. someone had an orange brown and that was not my cup of tea. i see noodlers beaver and it looks like waterman. i dont know much about consistency or sludginess in pens, so id not want to have to worry about that

i tend to like the darker brown as it looks more formal, kinda like how they did up those old time documents. so are there inks other than havana that i should consider? i find that the waterman is good in my one pen, and it seems to be a cheaper ink.

and since someone brought up a red-black ink, is there any comparison i can look at side-by-side between a red-black and say a darker brown like beaver or havana?

i can just say that to my eye, Noodler's Red-black is exactly the same as Havana. Though I found Havana to have a bit better flow.

Here are some of the browns in my collection. I hadn't considered Nightshade a brown, but since it was brought up here, I included it. Notice the two swabs of Noodler's Redblack, this color always seem to seperate on me, so I need to give the bottle a shake before filling one of my pens.

I used Noodler's black first and a direct comparison to a solid black.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
