Brand Marking on Sheaffers

Hi,

I recently got a Prelude ballpoint however the brand marking says "Sheaffer'S" (on the other side it's USA) instead of the normal looping "SHEAFFER USA".

Is my pen an old model and which pens carry the looping "SHEAFFER USA" and which carry "Sheaffer'S"?

Please help!

Thanks for the reply.

However I'm worrying if a Prelude ball pen with a "Sheaffer'S" marking would be a fake... anyone has any idea?

Hi,

I always seem to get this year wrong...I believe the official company name changed from "Sheaffer's" (denoting a business actually owned by the Sheaffer family) to "Sheaffer" (a pure brand name) in 1964, when the company was sold.

However, the Company has reverted to the old "Sheaffer's" spelling several times over the past couple of decades, in certain applications - nibs, cap bands, etc. I think the Balance II and Connaisseur might have used it, in addition (I think) to the Prelude. And if I'm not mistaken, I believe a version of the old large-S logo is engraved into the barrel of the "Roaring 20s" pen.

So good news - I don't think you need to be concerned about having bought a fake.

Cheers,

Jon

When the Prelude was first introduced all the pens in the line were marked "Sheaffer's". Then, sometime after Bic took over, the pens were marked "Sheaffer". A few years later "Sheaffer's" was restored to the nibs, but not elswhere on the pens (fountain pens, ballpoints, and roller balls).

FWIW, I always liked "Sheaffer's" better and think it has a lot more panache!
