Filling Mechanisms...

Hello all...

A follow up to a previous question....

Both my new Vac and Aerometric (squeeze blatter) won't quite fill all the way...is that typical, or are my mechanisms only quazi working?

I filled them both this morning for the first time with ink, and pumped the vac like 12 times, holding at the top one second or so, until the bubbles in the ink subsided, then pumped again. Repeated the same with my 21.

Just curious if this is typical, or if I have a bit of a problem...

Thanks,

Mark

A properly operating aerometric filler will fill to about 90% of capacity and this fill is based on where the breather tube is positioned inside the ink sac. If a breather tube is shortened for any reason this will diminish the total capacity as the pen will not fill higher that the uppermost point of the breather.

A properly serviced Vacuatic should fill well after 6-8 strokes and a failure to do so might be indicative of a small air leak, a clogged breather, or a shortened breather tube.

A clogged breather tube in an aerometric will also impair the pen's ability to fill.

Grrrr....

Well, I'll give them a few more shots, I've got some correspondence I need to tend to, and then I may have to send them your way Keith! I may become your MVC...Most Valuable Custormer!

I've been looking for a reference guide/book that has diagrams, instructions, etc...a step by step guide for FP restoration, but with no luck.

Oh well, at least I know I can call upon someone to lend me a helping hand...for a handsome price, of course :D

Cheers, and thanks for the note.

so ya have or haven't found Frank Dubiel's book? I believe Pendemonium sells this. I have it - sometimes the language can be a bit bogged down but thus far it's the most popular and from what I can tell, useful, repair manual for many kinds of pens. In addition, Dennis Lively is working on a series of videos that show repair techniques. I'm sorry, I don't have that link on hand but it should be in his signature on some of the earlier posts in the repair forum.

I don't know anything about the pens you are filling but for any kind of sac filler or something like the Sheaffer Vac-fill, I always leave the nib in the ink for several seconds on the last pump to allow the ink to flow in.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
