Hi Tom,

Just to be clear, by Parker 51, to you mean the vintage "51" or the recent Parker 51 SE (Special Edition)? They're very different pens, although they look similar on the outside. There are others here better qualified to explain the differences (I don't have either, though I hope to get an aerometric "51" at some point). Try searching through the old posts, and I think you'll find the old & new 51s discussed.

good luck!

Bill :)

The only hooded-nib Parker I have handled is an Aerometric from the 1950s, but I've heard that among modern Parkers, the 100 is better than the 51 SE, though there are probably some people who prefer the 51 SE. The 51 SE is not the same pen as an old 51; it doesn't self-fill or have a 51-like nib and feed.

Since the 51 SE appears to pretty much always be $350, and a sale price on the 100 would probably be less than $200, you might want to consider getting a new 100 and an old, actual 51 (Aerometric or Vacumatic) or two for what a 51 SE would cost you.

I have a Modern Parker 51 SE and I absoutly love it. It is a wonderful writing pen that is very light IMO. The Parker 100 looks heavier and the design looks modern. Both pens have hooded nibs and both are cartridge converters. There are some similarities but for the most part, they are 2 completely different pens. OBTW the Parker 100 is much cheaper than the modern 51 SE. I think Pam Braun sells the 100 for under 140.00 brand new. Here are some pictures! I hope this helps!!

The 100 is larger and heavier. Writes very nice, very free flowing. (I have likened it to a firehose) The following compares it to a couple other pens I have.

Parker 100 writing.

BTW - The Falcon 50 is a fine point as is the 100.....the 21 is probably a medium.

Forgot I had this photo. The top pen is a 21, the middle a 100, the lower a falcon 50, which is a slender pen, much like a ballpoint - the box is what the 100 comes in:

FLZapped:

I didn't realize that the 100 was soooo big! I have both 21s and 50s so the photo really helped.

JeffTL:

I don't know of any 51s that "self fill", vacumatics and aeromatics "fill" through the creation of a vacuum in the pen body (via moving a diaphram or squeezing the sack in one way or another). Are you thinking about the 61?

Also, I just bought a NIB 51 SE off the green board for $175. Can't wait to see how it writes.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
