Work Is Not Enough...

Thanks for the suggestions all. As I said originally I just wanted to vent. The frustration being is I have nothing to write or doodle, since I'm not a writer or artist. I also thought about doing the pen pal thing but I would have nothing to talk about all I do is go to work and stay at home.

I recently bought a new pen (Wing Sung 699) and I've filled loads of sheets of paper with nothing more than scribbles, random words, nonsense sentences, made up signitures, pretending to write in Chinese . . . anything really just to put nib & ink to paper.

It's a little like "colouring in" a mindless activity almost meditation.

Also, don't think I'm going to let you get away with "all I do is go to work and stay at home" :) - that's already a whole lot more interesting than a lot of people's lives. Go on. Give it a go. Start with three things you're thankful for today. Doesn't have to be anything major. Scribble them down . . . Right now, I'm thankful I can hear the birds outside  for the breeze through the window :) and the fact there's food in my fridge B)

As others have said, perhaps write a review . . . pen, or ink, doesn't matter. Don't call it a review if you're nervous, just share your love for pens here with the rest of us..

I'm finding that using my pen at work is not enough. I want to use it more often. I unfortunately have no other use for my pen. I am frustrated... I'm just venting so no need to respond.

You're scare...? I am getting ready to retire.

How many grocery lists can I make in a week with a few hundred pens?

I just made mine today, great fun. It's about 30 mins of looking at the ad and writing sale items along with regular replenishment items. I use a Story Supply pocket notebook and today it was a TWSBI Eco with Baystate Blue.

What a heck of a response from you all. I was just looking to vent. Hopefully some of your suggestions will help someone else figure things out for themselves.

I feel similar. I appreciate the opportunity to describe how I've adapted to this need. This has been a fun thread to follow.

Yeah it is a heck of a response, I do appreciate the posts and the info. I just have been having one of those, lives.

I also feel like I don't have enough to write. I literally buy Clairefontaine notebooks for the sole purpose of writing whatever mindless drivel comes to mind and then I throw them away when they are full. I am basically just constantly practicing my cursive and that's about it.

I'm to the point now where I don't really want to buy any more pens because I have so few excuses to actually write. There are pens I'd love to own, but it's hard enough just using what I have (10 pens and 11 inks). I might actually be happier with fewer pens, but the only pens I'd be willing to sell at this point are Wing Sungs and they are so cheap it isn't worth it.

It doesn't help that I feel like a complete anomaly on this forum. Everywhere I look someone is buying another pen despite already having 30, 40, or even 100+ pens!

Yeah, when I started here I didn't think I'd ever have any pen more than about $25-30 US, or more than about 40-50 "iconic" pens. I've gone WAY past both of those benchmarks.

But the joke is that my husband now tells people that I "used" to collect pens -- but now I really collect ink....

The problem with both is that I keep reading reviews and going "Oooh, shiny...." Fortunately in some cases I see pens that there is zero way I can afford them unless I win the lottery -- so I can look at the pen, go "ooh..." and then look it at the pricetag and go "Yikes! Maybe not...."

Not a bad suggestion (writing all forum posts by hand). I find the process of uploading a pic to this forum to be laborious enough to prevent me from doing that, lol.

Another suggestion for putting your pens to use: sign up for a class. Adult education class, community college, whatever. You get opportunities to take notes in class, and also you can use your fountain pen to do homework.

For example, I'm taking an Italian language class right now. I will be using my pen to write out homework exercises, make notes of vocabulary words and grammar outside of class, and also write assigned essays.

Also, taking a class gets you out of the house when you're not working!

I feel I have no time for anything and with this new position I have I feel I have even less time. And with whatever illnesses I have, I am tired most of the time. I get home from work and I stare at my computer screen for a few hours then go to bed to start my misery over again. It has taken me two days to get this post made. I wanted to write my response and post it but I decided against it, I want people to be able to read the post if they so choose, if I write it that wouldn't happen.

I have thought about getting a pen pal, not with a criminal, but again I would have nothing to talk to them about. Every message from me would be, "went to work, employees and customers peeved me off, felt sick all day, endless headache is worse today, went to bed". That's if it could be read by the other person.

It really depends on whether you actually want to communicate, and exchange ideas'/ views'/ news'/ information with someone else.

You could just get a set of story cubes if you want some sort of prompt to write something for yourself that isn't a journal full of what you deem your "misery".

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

I like to go to the pub, order a drink I've never had, and write a blurb about it while I drink it. There's a guy at my favorite pub that thinks I'm writing about him. It's kind of fun.

That's awesome :-)

I feel I have no time for anything and with this new position I have I feel I have even less time.

I'm assuming (never a good thing) that the lack of time you feel due to your new position will soon fade as you become used to the tasks involved and you settle into an efficient way of dealing with what's new.

And with whatever illnesses I have, I am tired most of the time.

Your tiredness from your illnesses may also be compounded by you not actually doing enough of something that excites you. I often feel low and realise it's because I've not done enough of anything to make me feel high.

I get home from work and I stare at my computer screen for a few hours then go to bed to start my misery over again.

Many of us do exactly the same. A couple of hours escape though our computer screens are better than none at all. I believe this is normal.

Doesn't matter how long it took you. The point is YOU DID IT!

I have thought about getting a pen pal, not with a criminal, but again I would have nothing to talk to them about.

I'd be happy to be your pen pal (I'm not a criminal) and I'm sure we'll find something to talk about.

Every message from me would be, "went to work, employees and customers peeved me off, felt sick all day, endless headache is worse today, went to bed". That's if it could be read by the other person.

No, it wouldn't. I'd applaud you for actually holding down a job and encourage you to write about the teeny tiny cracks of light that exist between those moments of colleague and customer dispair. I'm sure that those tiny cracks will soon burst open to allow enough sunshine through that you'll soon forget about the odd picky colleague or rude customer.

Something else I'm sure of . . . I wouldn't be the only one willing to do so. :)

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
