The Two? Different Styles Of Parker Vp Nibs?

doggle2

Recommended Posts

I was researching the Parker VP, a pen that is currently the one I want to get next. I found two different shapes of nibs, but haven't been able to find an explanation. All that I've been able to figure out is that the second style seems to be far more rare.

Does anyone have any insight?

I also do not recognize the VP nib on the second photo. I guess that it is not the light and/or angle with which the photo is taken that is fooling us? You may ask Pentooling.

EDIT:

After checking the other pictures at Pentooling it is clear that it is not the light that is fooling us: it is another version of the VP nib with a wide flat top surface and extra broad nib points.

On one of the additional photos there is an accompanying original Parker pamphlet describing the pen as "VP with XBroad Right Foot Oblique 21 Gull Wing Nib".

I was not aware of the term "gull wing" in respect to VP nibs. As far as I am aware, that term was not used in Parker VP advertisements so maybe it does refer to the particular shape of this extra broad #21 nib.

So it is not a prototype but possibly a rare nib indeed.

And nice to learn something new, thanks for bringing it up.

Good luck on your hunt for a VP - they are great pens. For the past 6 months my shirt pocket everyday pen has been a VP filled with Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black.

Yes, the second type of nib you show is rare. If you look 3/4 of the way down the "Site Updates" page at parker51.com, you can see another example on a VP with prototype features, where it is referred to as an "early winged nib."

I've recently acquired a never-inked VP and am loving it. It came with a 62 nib, I've found both a 65 and 66 to try as well. Love this pen.

Does anybody have a scan of the owner's pamphlet that came with a new VP? I've been looking but so far, without any luck.

Thanks! -Carolyn

Yes, you can download it from Jim Mamoulides' PenHero website:

I also have one of these (mint) VS Parker fountain pens in my collection, with a "gull wing" 14k nib. What else is special about this pen is the filling mechanism. https://tompens.com/en/toltotoll/parker-galeri/egyeb-parker/1198-striated-parker-vs-early-gull-wing-nib

Nice pen (though it is a VP, not VS) and nice picture of the Gull Wing nib!  As you may know, the Clean Filler is very fragile and the stem is prone to breakage. The most special though is the barrel with longitudinal grooves. I have not seen such a barrel before.

These pens are really something special. I can’t help but wonder why Parker didn’t just sub the plastic used in 51 aero connectors for the lucite. You’d use the window, but that wasn’t a problem for the 51.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
