Nibmeister Or Back To Manufacturer?

I have a Pelikan M805 with a medium nib that I got this past September. When I first got it, the tines were slightly misaligned and it would feel a bit scratchy on right to left motions. I dealt with it for a bit, but finally, I decided to break out my loupe and see what could be done. I ended up getting the tines aligned and it writes much better now. I began using the pen much more and finally, I decided to give it a better cleaning before switching the ink to something else.

So, I unscrewed the nib and flushed it out really well and upon screwing the nib back in, the nib has rotated on the feed! I know from firsthand experience that you do not have to use a lot of force to get nibs in and out of a modern Pelikan, and I don't screw them down very tight, so I was sure I didn't just apply too much force. I kind of tested the nib by screwing it in and out of the pen, and sure enough, the whole nib assembly seems loose, as the nib will rotate back and forth on the feed! The pen has also become extremely wet to the point that every ink I've tried completely fills the feed fins to the brim with ink in the time it takes to write a paragraph or two. I've always stopped before it drips onto the page, but that is no doubt what would happen if I kept writing. I can't use a pen that wet, so I have to decide what to do.

It seems the nib shuffling/sliding around on the feed is a result of the friction from the collar just not being tight enough, but the shuffling around appears to now have caused a massive increase in wetness. Can this "loose collar" be fixed by a nibmeister, or should I just send the pen to Pelikan and request warranty service? If it matters, I bought the pen brand new off eBay and I doubt Pelikan Germany will consider this "under warranty", but I'd pay to have it fixed either way -- I just want to be able to use my pen and to know the nib will be tight in the collar going forward. I'm leaning towards using a nibmeister if collars are "fixable" since I want the wetness tuned too. I'm not sure Pelikan Germany would do anything other than swap the nib, and that might mean getting a different nib that still needs a nibmeister's tuning.

So, nibmeister or send it to Pelikan? And if a nibmeister can do this kind of work, who would you recommend?

I would send it back, but it might also depend on who you bought it from (authorized resellers etc).

Send it to someone, if bought in the States, Chartpack...if bought from a world wide dealer, send it directly to Hanover. Though the English retail sellers have a good rep...send it back.

Well, I can't send it back to the actual eBay seller at this point. Do you mean send it to Pelikan for service?

Charpak won't do anything...it doesn't qualify for their warranty service. They would happily sell me a whole new nib, but that's about it...and for the price they charge, I'm betting one could just get a whole new M805 to be honest...

If nothing works, Joey at flexible nib factory can make a Pelikan nib collar to your specifications...I think. He is very busy with his own projects, but he makes Pelikan collars for différent nibs. You could ask him to make one for your nib, and as a temporary measure, get a Pelikan collar for a Jowo nib or something and use that for now.

Here's a collar and feed he designed for a Bock nib: https://www.instagram.com/p/BcDpF8vgcsf/?hl=en. So if he can make that, I'm sure he can replicate the original with a tighter fit.

If the feed is staying in place and the nib will rotate, then get the nib in the right position and push it down into the feed ( I would push down on the shoulders of the nib). This should seat the nib back in it's proper position. This is likely all a nibmeister would end up doing.

pelikan can be relied to fix a nib. Visconti not so much.

Selling a boatload of restored, fairly rare, vintage Japanese gold nib pens, click here to see (more added as I finish restoring them)

I'll give this a try tomorrow. I didn't think the nib was sticking out more than normal, but I'll compare it to my Renaissance Brown to see...

Both nibs are seated at the same exact depth. I don't think pushing it harder into the collar is a good idea. I might end up bending something...

I guess I'll just start reaching out to nibmeisters. If they say they cant or wont fix this kind of problem then I'll send it off to Pelikan.

Send it to Pelikan, Hanover Germany.

This guy lives down in your neck of the woods. Might be worth a shot.

Well, I'm really amazed at what this guy is doing for the FP community. I hope his business takes off and flourishes! Sadly, he has a few sentences in his website that say he doesn't do nib modifications and he refers that kind of work to other nibmeisters. He is pretty specialized in what he offers and for good reason, in my opinion. For that reason, I won't bother him with an email asking about my nib issues.

I'll try to send some emails to other nibmeisters this week to ask them about my problem and see if they are willing to work on it. I may also just reach out to Pelikan Germany to see what sending it to them would cost me.

He doesn't modify nibs; he makes feeds and housings... As I suggested above, he could machine a housing for you that would be a good fit.

OK, I must have misunderstood the suggestion. My apologies. I really just want the current nib fixed, preferably by Pelikan under warranty (I emailed them today, we shall see what they say). I'll pay to have a nibmeister adjust it if I have to, but more and more I'm leaning towards just wanting a new nib...

Not to be negative, but I doubt Nibs fall under warranty protection. At this point, if I was the seller, I would assume that the nib damage was caused by the buyer, especially 6-7 months on.

I had an issue with an EF Pelikan nib. It wrote like a M. I was in contact with seller immediately.

Free plus mailing is cheaper than mailing and paying for the work.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
