Jowo Bf Nibs Vs Standard Nibs On Twsbi And Edison

frogbaby

Recommended Posts

i have sucessfully swapped goulet #6 nibs in my twsbi 700 and micarta as well as my edison collier

i want to try a couple of nibs from fbnibs.com but am still a bit confused despite listening to their youtube videos and reading their facebook page

i think that the "bf" nib will fit the edison and twsbi feeds just like the goulet nibs since both feeds appear to be straight and the bf nib works on a straight feed (versus the non-bf nib which fits a curved feed)

have i got this right ?

has anyway bought and used the "bf" nib on an edison or twsbi or both ?

thanks all for any help on this

I believe Edison use the standard JoWo nib, which has a slightly more curved feed - and I assumed that the Vac 700 was the same, but the fpnibs people tell me that it actually used a flatter feed. If that's true, then the BF nib will be good for your Vac 700, but a bit 'iffy' with an Edison nib unit. Can't speak from direct experience, though...

i have a goulet nib in my edison collier right now and the nib and feed look flat as a board as does the nib and feed in 700 .... hmmm

if i get fpnibs right, would mean that both would take a "bf" nib

maybe i will email them and see what they say

I think that's a good idea - they're pretty good at responding to queries. Let us know what they say!

[FWIW, Goulet and Edison nibs are both 'regular' #6 JoWo nibs.]

i pulled the nib and feed on my 700 (old version not the new) and my edison collier

the twsbi feed is straight and the nib is straight, according to pablo, this would make them "bf" jowo nibs ... i have no idea if twsbi uses standard jowo feeds or their own ? ... i am guessing maybe they use standard jowo feeds which used to be "bf" feeds

pablo says that the "bf" nibs are being phased out and he has some 1500 of them so i guess if you want a 700 replacement nib, it may be a good idea to buy now

the edison feed is slightly curved and the nib also slightly curved so this is the standard jowo (current) nib

i also tried a goulet nib and it appear to be standard as well

i think i will write pablo back and ask if i have got this right

--------

update: wrote to pablo and he confirmed that i have this correct

This was my understanding, from Pablo's YouTube video and the comments section: The Vac 700 is closer to the "BF" style, while Edison Pens, Goulet, Andersons etc all sell standard JoWo nibs with custom branding.

JoWo and Bock seem to be quite happy to make custom nibs and feeds for customers (pen manufacturing companies) who order in sufficiently high quantities, so I doubt that TWSBI will be changing their Vac 700 nibs any time soon - but, yes, if you're wanting to find an "after-market" JoWo nib this seems to be your best bet.

[i think Pablo also said that Bock have a straight nib and feed on their #6 nibs, which would explain why their titanium nibs are so easy to swap into the Vac 700. I'm sure, though, that others have had success swapping JoWo and Bock nibs between pens that take them, so the difference in curvature between them may not be as critical to their functioning as you'd think? Again, I haven't tried this - so please take it with a grain of salt!]

i think it works one way and not the other

you cannot put a straight #6 "bf" nib on a curved feed, at least i wouldn't try ... in other words a 700 nib on an edison pen would not be a good idea because there would be too much space between the curved feed and the tines

the other direction, putting a standard #6 curved nib on a straight feed, like a twsbi 700, wouldn't be as much of a problem since the curved times would likely press down on the straight feed giving you very good contact between nib and feed

but, as you say, people have had sucess with nib swapping in all kinds of directions so in the end you have to give it a try

i have bought goulet #6 nibs, which are standard curved and they go on everything

at least i know that when i order from pablo i will get the standard nib and not the bf
