Advice Request: Pel M101N Threaded Filler

I used a dry ink and, while threading the piston down during flushout, the threaded filler knob unit backed out of the barrel. :( I taught myself how to reassemble, but I would appreciate advice on how to keep the filler knob unit from backing out again.

I fashioned a wrench which mates to the flats on the filler body, snugging up the filler knob unit. The unit stays threaded in place while the piston moves downward. Yet when the knob and filler again back out when I attempt to retract the piston (since the filler unit has left-hand threads).

I am considering using just a drop of shellac on the filler unit threads as I reassemble, letting it sit overnight to dry. My fear is that, if this adhesive does not hold, it will have to (1) attempt removal of the filler unit, (2) remove shellac from very, very fine threads, and (3) find more effective adhesive.

It's always better to ask before making a mistake. That's why I'm asking. ;)

Thank you so much for helping. This is a great pen and I don't want to make a mistake.

Use section sealant. Not shellac. HTH

Eta. Do lube the piston seal. If the piston movement is smooth, the filler cannot back out once it has been snugged into the barrel. It only backs out when the stiction is high enough.

I had the same problem with the same version of the M101N. As Hari said, I lubricated the piston, and used a single small droplet of Ron Zorn's section sealant, and it hasn't come out again.

Thanks, Tweel! The added feedback is very helpful! I love that pen, and I was quite surprised when the backout occurred. I'm glad to know a simple fix is easily achieved! This is one pen I don't want to see compromised. Thank you!

by section sealant are you referring to what is used for MB 146/9? Like a beeswax + liquid paraffin mix?

You're very welcome! I was happy when the problem with my pen proved to be cured.

No, it's a very thick fluid, rosin-based sealant (I think actually rosin and castor oil) that holds and seals things, but easily melts and releases when you need to take something apart again. Sheaffer, Parker and one or two other companies used this type of sealant. Here's Ron Zorn's:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
