Brexit's Pen

I have just seen Theresa May's picture in the news. It looks like a Parker Duofold to me... Could it be also a Conway Stewart? If it is a Duofold let me also ask... is it possible to know if it was made in the UK or France (or elsewhere)? I suppose that in the UK, as I suppose also that the pen was carefully chosen for the occasion. But as far as I know the pen is not made in the UK anymore. I know the signature itself it's what counts at the end, but I am also interested in the symbolic meaning that pens acquire in some relevant moments.

Looks like a Duofold International (Black, Gold Trim, very conservative, very Theresa May,). I would like to think it was a Newhaven product, but the irony of using a Nantes made pen would be quite delicious.

+1 on this.

I would like to think it was a Newhaven product, but the irony of using a Nantes made pen would be quite delicious.

If the government merely sent someone out to buy a modern, French-made, Duofold in preparation for this photo-opportunity, it would be entirely in-keeping with the standards of veracity of the claims and 'promises' made during the referendum campaign, and with the predicted consequences of May's preferred 'hard Brexit' option.

Did you see yesterday how the pro-hard-Brexit MPs reacted to the release of the cross-party Brexit Select Committee's report of their findings after interviewing expert witnesses from trade, industry, academia, and government for their predictions for the consequences of the government's 'hard Brexit' proposal?

Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf would be proud :(

Thanks for posting the photo. I love seeing fountain pens being used by people in the news. Agreed it is a Duofold. The model with two raised cap bands of equal width and the single band at the bottom came into production beginning around 1996 and if she has had the pen for a while, it would have been made in the UK. The ones I have seen with that band deaign all say UK. I wonder which nib size she favours.

Could be a Duofold Centennial from the length above her hand, but the two are quite similar in length.

I can't see two rings above the nib on the section, but that may be the image resolution or my eyesight.

Regards,

Richard

There appears to be only one ring above the nib, which goes with the two equal-width rings on the cap of the 1996 model.

It is almost certainly a Parker Duofold. Parker's still provide 'official' pens for the Queen and probably the Government too.

At least she didn't use a roller ball.

Or a felt-tip!

I wonder if Parker tried to get her to use an 'Ingenuity' with one of their '5th' refills....

It's clearly a black Duofold fountain pen. I can't see if it is international or a centennial.

I have a couple of these myself and beside the simple looks (in black GT) they are very nice pens.

I would go so far to say it's the ace of spades design black and gold international. Great choice, I wonder what nib size? B?

CeeElle, there is another thread "Brexit's Pen" at "Fountain- and Dip Pens", where you may find an example of PM May's writing.

And, as said before, great choice!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
