Sailor Sapporo Pro Gear No Longer Available With Gold Trim?

I've been shopping around for a Sailor Sapporo Pro Gear and it looks like the vast majority of places have them only available with rhodium plated trim, not gold. I actually do prefer the gold trim on a black pen, so I was wondering if Sailor has stopped manufacturing them with gold trim or what.

Don't know where you are, but no, the black/gold combination is the standard Sailor combination. The rhodium trim is less common. Maybe it's just the stock situation at the moment.

Well, I've looked mostly in online shops (Anderson Pens, Goldspot, Pen Chalet, etc.) as well as Amazon and ebay, and I basically can only find Sapporos in rhodium trim, with the occasional gold trimmed fine-nibbed one (and I'm looking for a medium or broad). Engeika does have them listed with gold trim, however, but I've heard that their website doesn't always accurately reflect their stock (though they do try to get what you ordered best they can).

Thanks for the info and the Rakuten link. I've tried looking on Rakuten as well, but I'm still not too good at finding the reputable (or any) stores on there. :)

Classic Fountain Pens in the US has the Pro Gear in the black/gold version.

(The other day I was looking around on nibs.com for either a Pro Gear Slim or a Pro Gear in black/gold. That's how I know they have them. The OP did not say where he/she lives, but I'm guessing Japan. Ordering from the States would probably expensive.)

Thanks for the links to those Rakuten shops. I'll add them to my list.

Actually, I live in the USA. I was looking for Japan-based shops because these pens tend to be as much as 50% cheaper from there, even if you include international shipping. However, I compared it to US-based shops to see why the gold ones apparently were hard to find.

Nibs.com does have the gold Slims, but it seems like no other US-based retailer has them listed as available. Maybe it's a supply/demand thing -- the rhodium is significantly more popular for some reason, so they don't bother stocking gold.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
