Any Fountain Pen Enthusiasts In Western Ny?

Invictus Maneo

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Being rather new to the wonderful world of fountain pens, I was wondering if there are any other FPN members in the western NY area?

I live in Rochester, NY and am looking for other FP enthusiasts to bounce ideas off of, learn new fountain pen things, and just share this hobby (obsession) with!

I feel sort of like I'm on a raft in the middle of the Pacific Ocean (ok, maybe Lake Ontario) in that there are no FP friendly stores (that I know of, anyway) and no other people to share my enthusiasm with. In fact, everyone that I have approached as to being into FP's just looks back with a blank stare on their face. After a while it gets a bit disheartening.

I'm hoping there are some other enthusiasts in this area!

No not really, WNY is a wasteland. Closes thing to FP store we have is Hyatts in Buffalo and their FP selection is limited. But their ink selection is nice.

Hi Buffalo guy here. Dont feel bad about not having any FP stores in the Roc, in exchange you get awesome Gatehouse Burgers and Garbage Plate.

Hello Invictus Maneo,

I also live in the ROC and am a FP enthusiast. HamFist is right, not much in the FP arena here, and I have not checked out Hyatt's for ink so I can not comment on that but I will now.

I shop online for FP ink and pens mostly at gouletpens.com and jetpens.com.

I live in Buffalo and it is a wasteland for fountain pens. I shop exclusively on-line, the prices are best. Goulet, Pen Chalet, Anderson are my primary go to sites.

Sounds like there are at least 4 of us in the "wasteland".

At least you folks have Tim Hortons.

I'll join you in spirit. I'm an expat from Jamestown and I feel your pain when I go back for family visits (ALWAYS in the summer). Even the antique shops have nothing (or they have been picked clean). Ithaca used to have some nice pens at the Cornell Campus store but even that is no more.

Well, at least there are a few of us. I too use Goulet and Goldspot for my merchandise needs. It's great that their return policies are so liberal but it would be nice to be able to go somewhere and actually be able to see pens/inks/etc in person before buying.

I know we used to have a Hyatt's here but I'm pretty sure it closed.

As far as antique stores go, I just went to one yesterday and found an old Estherbrook and Wearever lever fillers. The Estherbrook had a gold nib but both pens were in really rough shape. When I attempted to operate the levers I could hear a gritty sound and the section on the Esterbrook didn't even fit in the barrel. The proprietor wanted $25 for both but I'm holding off pending running them past my friend to see if they can even be restored and if so, how much it might cost.

The gritty sound is a petrified sac crumbling as the lever crushes it. Be careful as this action can damage the lever. Resacs are easy, by the way. Richard Binder's website http://www.richardspens.com/ has instructions on how to resac (click on reference pages and scroll to the repair section at the bottom) and several reliable sources will gladly sell you the sacs, shellac, and talc you need to do it right. Esties don't normally have gold nibs so the poor fit probably means that the section on that pen was not the one that is supposed to be there.

Most antique shops don't know how to price pens. Once in a while you get really lucky but that seems to be the exception rather than the rule.

The little things really count.

We had our first meet and greet today and it was fantastic! Like minded people sharing their love and knowledge about fountain pens and ink.

There were four of us and probably well over 100 pens, 50 ink samples and LOTS of information passed back and forth. I got to try some pens I've really been wanting to see in person and I think we all discovered some new things! Both Buffalo and Rochester were represented.

The meeting went on for about two hours and I was disappointed that I had to leave. I think we easily had another hour or two left in us!

I hope we can do this again very soon. If there are other western NYers who are interested please let me know and I'll contact you before we do it again. To those who showed up today, thank you!

After we held the inaugural/winter meetup in Rochester, we've got the spring GNYPIG meetup coming May 6th in Waterville. Destination for the summer get-together is still up for grabs!

Out the gate we were figuring quarterly/seasonal meetups unless pitchfork mobs form demanding more frequent events! :)

BoatyHS do you know of any good venues in the Buffalo area? We don't have an official Buffalo/Niagara region host yet, either you or Motorrader interested in the job?

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
