Screw-In Nib Units

Recommended Posts

I was reading about swapping nibs just by unscrewing the nib unit and screwing another in its place, like the Pelikan below:

http://www.indy-pen-dance.com/images/M400-Full-Flex-NL.png

I got interested and went to look at my pens, but with some of them I can't tell for sure if it has a screw-in nib or if it's just a friction fit directly to the section. I don't want to try and twist them to find out and possibly damage the pens. Is there a way to tell for sure if a nib unit will screw out of the section apart from trial-and-error?

Also, how common is this feature?

Or maybe I got it all wrong and it doesn't work like this at all :headsmack:

Thanks!

Of all the pens I have only the Pelikan has a Screw threaded nib section. The Onotos and Sailors are just pull out and push in type. I have never mess with my Montblanc but I would subject trying it either. My Delta pens look to be friction fit as well as the Visconti but I have not personaly tried to remove the nib either.

So I would say most are probably Friction Fit, but I am sure other with more Experence will chime in any minute and set us straight!

Most Esterbrooks have screw-in nib units.

Also Parker Sonnet, Parker Frontier, Sheaffer Cadet and some others and I think some Reform pens.

Furthermore you can put Pelikan nibs in Esterbrooks. I have a blue Estie J pen sporting a Pelikan M400 OM 14K nib. When screwed in the steel collar protrudes from the J pen. Writes perfectly.

The one Edison pen I've got has a screw in nib unit, and replacements can be bought. My Taccia Overture and Reform 1745 also have them, but I don't know where you'd get replacements.

TWSBI has used them up until now, but I read that their new Eco does not have a screw in unit.

I have lots of Esterbrooks and a couple of Pelikans. Never occurred to me to swap nibs between them. Don't know how many brands are interchangeable like this, although I've read of Osmiroid nibs being used in Esterbrooks.

Oh, and Franklin Christoph uses them too.

This is very interesting! I always learn new things here.

Gargle (also Bing/duckduckgo/etc.) is your friend.

Of the top of my head, I know that Esterbrook, Edison and Pelikan offer(ed) screw-in nibs (since I have one or more examples of each), as do Bexley and Franklin-Christoph.

Platignum Silverline pens have screw-in nib units. Also Sheaffer TipDip and Fineline pens.

I think what you will find is that many of the modern cartridge/converter pens actually have screw-in nib/feed assemblies, but it will be rather difficult to determine which ones will interchange with which others. There are a few manufacturers of nib assemblies, and their products are not interchangeable.

I have seen nib/feed assemblies, available retail over the web, manufactured by Bock, JoWo and Schmidt. There may be others, but most of the modern pen producers buy from one of these few. In almost all cases, if your pen's section is formed and threaded for one of the brands of nib/feed assemblies, only that brand and size will possibly interchange. There is no cross-match that I've ever found.

I never liked the Pelikan M400 14K OM nib much, and was desperate to find a use for it.

If Osmiroid fits Esterbrook and Pelikan fits Esterbrook does Osmiroid fit Pelikan? It would be amazing if my Osmiroid B4 nib, for example, worked in my M200 body!

To add to the list of pens with screw-in nibs: Kaweco Sport Classic. Modern Conway Stewarts.

And the JoWo nibs are easily swappable between Edison and Franklin-Christoph pens that take No. 6 nibs.

Typically Montblanc pens requires an specialized tool for nib removal. I have one for my 149, works fine. There are some exceptions, specially on vintage MBs.
