Strathmore 500 Series Writing Journals

While searching for hardbound writing journals, I came across the Strathmore Writing Journal which I have never seen before. Their website states that it is new but not sure how new. Has anyone used fountain pens in this particular journal? And if so, what are your opinions?

Very interested on how these compare to the Stillman and Birns Epsilon series.

I've been looking for a journal for a while that is not a Rhoia and I'm very interested in these. Strathmore makes a beautiful sheet of paper that should perform very well in this journal. I'll probably be ordering one for my accounting class to try out and will let ya'll know how it performs.

Wow - used to use this as a writing sheet many years ago. Was quality plus back when so very keen to see a review of these. Anyone know the prices?

Here there are in Dick Blick:

Softcover: http://www.dickblick.com/products/strathmore-softcover-500-series-writing-journal/

Hardcover: http://www.dickblick.com/products/strathmore-500-series-writing-journal/

I like the fact that it comes in blank and lined options. Stillman doesn't offer lined ones.

Agree - the choice is nice. Thank you for this link. Went straight to Dick Blick website after finding these on Strathmore site but could not find them. I'm assuming they just added this to the site. Must be very new. The Art Warehouse link appears to be for the older version.

They're available through Amazon, too. I'd love to see someone test one and show us the results.

Anyone know the ruling? 6mm or 7mm?

Hi, I'm part of the team that developed the Strathmore Writing project. We designed the lines with the help of a number of calligraphers and pen artists who provided us with valuable feedback. From that research we ended up going with a line spacing that is a slightly generous 7mm (about 7.5mm to be precise). Additionally, the lines are dotted and non-photo blue. This allows the lines to drop out during scanning for artists who like to share their work online or make prints. We'd love to hear everybody's feedback on this line of products!

Great to hear from you. I am sure you will get very honest reviews from the folk here. Do you know if they are available anywhere in Australia as yet?

7.5mm, that's great.

Anybody in Canada carrying these? I checked Midoco in Toronto, but they have the Strathmore Art Journal.

I would love to try these.

I don't believe they are. Jasco is an authorized Strathmore dealer, so you could put in a request with them. Otherwise you can purchase them online. Here's a list of our online retailers: http://www.strathmoreartist.com/wheretobuy-online-retailers.html

I just ordered a softcover large, as soon as I receive, I'd be glad to let all know how it performs. Stay tuned! Just under 25USD with shipping and tax.

7/15/15, the mail is kind. The Strathmore Writing 500 shows up. At 7 3/4"x9 3/4", it is the largest journal/notebook I own. The cover is soft plasticized paper outside and more traditional inside. The paper itself has a slight textured feel to it with a natural off white colour to it and unobtrusive light blue dot lines. Labeling states made in the U.S.A. It holds ink from FP's very well indeed with my very wet and very wide Mb146 Fine leaving no feathering that I could see. I like the feel of the paper as it gives a nice toothy sensation, it is not unpleasant. There is minimal to no ghost through and bleed through is nonexistent...at least with my pens and Noodler's bulletproof inks which I find to be very wet writing. Recommended.

Thank you so much for your review. We're always interested in how our products perform in the real world. I will share this with my team. They will be very happy to read this.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
