Can Somebody Explain Me The Sailor Tree?

The Pilot tree is like a gradual slope. The Platinum tree is like steps on a staircase. I do not understand the Sailor tree, in their low end there is like 40 dollar jump.

And I do not understand the odd looking nibs they have. It's like 4 nibs on a nib. Why?

their low end line is not being carried by a lot of retailers in the US and not all that exciting in terms of nib selection (not until 5000 Yen level Young Profit).

Although when you think about it their low end is aimed at domestic market, and Japanese writing needs the finer nibs.

the King Eagle nib is the one with 3 nibs stacked and that was made as a signature nib and emulating paint brush.

Nibs.com has breakdown of all the specialty nibs

I'm not sure it's all that different from Pilot or Platinum's model if you count out the cheap 14k Nib at 5000 yen like Pilot Celemo and Platinum Standard. For Pilot's low end range, The 78G, Metro, Prera vary from 1000 yen to 3500yen but all share the nib and feed, And for Platinum you only have the Preppy, Plasir, and Balance, with Preppy and Plasir sharing the same nib. I would argue that Sailor has the most interesting nib selection in the >5000 yen range with the Young Profit, but it's not been a popular model to talk about. Really when talking about Sailor on the internet it's all about the gold nibs on 1911/Profit, ProGear, and KOP (I'm guilty of that since the cheapest Sailor I own is Pro-Color 500 while I own several preppies and metropolitans)

Well, 3, at any rate. Those nibs are very broad, and are designed for writing in Japanese. A stub, which gives a similarly broad line and can be made with one layer, is broad in the wrong direction for Japanese/Chinese characters.

The Naginata Togi nib allows a broad horizontal line, with narrower verticals, and gives an improved look to the characters, for fine-medium line widths.

Upper: MB Broad

Lower: Sailor Naginata Togi.

The more exotic ones with multiple layers allow similar effects on broader lines, while also allowing sufficient ink-flow to keep up with broad strokes.
