How To Get The Spring Out Of The Cross Aventura

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody,

I had my Cross Aventura for a long time, recently decided to get a converter for it, but I read online that you need to take the spring out first. I was wondering if anybody knows how to take the spring out?

Thank you in advance,

Nick

Hi Nick, Firstly you do need to take the spring out, it will turn the converter as you replace the barrel and empty the ink out of the nib. I know because I did that here.

I think I used a wooden paintbrush handle, about 3mm round section, tapering wider, and jammed it in the spring, then turned it anticlockwise. I have some small brushes in the Humbrol range, 0,1, & 2 size if you know them. You might need to try a few to find the right size, I did try metal screwdrivers but they don't grip the spring of course.

Thank you for the advice, I tried both of the methods, but my situation was a little more complicated, I spilled some ink in the barrel at one point, so it solidified inside the barrel. Finally I was able to get it out by using a bent paperclip to make it grab one of the rungs, and after one hour and a few colorful words, the spring finally came out.

Thanks again!

Nick

Don't get me started. It was a nightmare for me. I ended up pulling the end cap off but that resulted in a very scratched up exterior. And yes, a few choice words came out of my mouth. And it's not even my favorite pen!

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.

Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
