Sailor Bung Box "4B"

A while ago, a long long while, I asked the inestimable Sam_Capote, who I had previously assumed owned every ink under the sun if he had tried out Bung Box inks made by Sailor. He had never heard of the inks and proceeded to go through hell and high water working with a forwarding service to get them to him. He very nicely put up some samples, which after almost a year, I consulted before I finally got some of the inks for myself.

Instead of going with a forwarding service, I asked cool-japan on ebay about it, the amazing guy who has been selling me all the Kobe inks I have reviewed recently.

I simply cannot say enough good things about this ink. It is the blue-black of my DREAMS.

I've always wanted my blue-blacks to be really blue on the lighter shaded areas, and so many times they tend towards grays or lighter, ashy blues. But not this one!

The shading is nice too!

Check out that sheen!!

The only downside is the price. When I asked cool-japan why he didn't normally stock the inks, he told me it was because he couldn't get as good a price for the Bung Box inks as he was getting for the Kobe ones, and he didn't think anyone would want to pay $40 USD for a 50 mL bottle of ink. Considering the shipping was free and there were no customs charges, I didn't feel it was painfully expensive, especially because I LOVE LOVE LOVE this colour. :D

I took LOTS of photos of this one, so see more photos in my review album here.

You're on a roll with these reviews Saskia. This color is beautiful and the sheen is pretty fantastic!

Same as for my reply to the other bunga bunga. Especially the inclusion of a bit of purple is for me reminiscent of an aubergine, my very most favourite colour (I think).

it certainly is a great blue-black. i too heart this color. i wonder if it has the same quality as the rest of Sailor or Kobe inks, since it's made by the same company.

Nice ink indeed  But my question is like Ghostplane's isn't a pain in the ass to clean or to flush???

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

I can now report back about the staining. It is a bit harder to rinse out of pens than normal, but not much. An overnight soak in warm water with a drop of dish soap cleaned the pen entirely and my NOS Sheaffer snorkel with the perfectly yellow ink window remained unscathed. :)

Sapphire is gorgeous, and I wants it (precioussss), but there are lots of gorgeous bright blues around. This one is really special and unique. If only it weren't $40 a bottle, I would be tempted to stockpile.

If people are after the sheen, Sailor's Kaikyo Blue from the Kobe series has the same colour sheen, though Kaikyo itself is a rich blue rather than a blue-black, and it's a bit lighter.

I have been promising a review of it for several months now. Oops!

I guess a lot depends on what you might mean by "waterproof". Different people seem to mean somewhat different things and have different expectations.

In my review it seems reasonable, but some ink is lost for certain. None of the Sailor inks are explicitly advertised as being "waterproof", but some have better resistance.

4B seems to be good enough for me.

Thanks!
