Comparing 18 Blue Inks

I guess you can tell what my favorite color ink is! Even though at current rates of use my current supply will last longer than my expected remaining life (I’m not kidding!), I keep buying more. A couple of points of “fine print” before the scan:

1. All samples were done with a Rohrer & Klinger glass pen dipped in ink, on Rhodia Dot Pad. Given the difficulty in always picking up the same amount of ink for each sample, some variation has been inadvertently introduced.

2. I don’t know anything about color adjusting scanners or monitors. All I can do is compare what I see on the screen to what I see on my paper. In general my system does not seem to pick up red very well, so some blues look more purple on paper than they do in my scan. I’ll do my best to offer comments regarding what we can see here.

With the lawyers taken care of, here are my current 18:

A few comments to improve the accuracy…..

1. In the scan, Tsuyu Kusa, Blauw, Kon Peki, and Monteverde Blue look fairly close to me. On paper, Kon Peki is lighter with more turquoise, Tsuyu Kusa a bit lighter than the remaining two, and Akkerman Blauw a bit brighter than Monteverde Blue.

2. Asa Gao has a bit more purple tone than I see in the scan

3. For some reason J. Herbin 1670 Bleu Ocean picked up so much ink on the pen I could barely write. This made the scan darker than I see when I write with a nib pen in the same ink.

4. Benevolent Badger appears lighter than in real life. On paper I find it fairly close to Tsuki Yo.

5. Henry Hudson Blue also appears a bit lighter than on paper, where I find it close to Majestic Blue.

6. Although in my sample here the Majestic Blue did not exhibit the red sheen for which it is noted, the Akkerman Shocking Blue did so in spades. Perhaps this is one more indication that the frequently rumored guess that Akkerman uses Diamine ink may be true.

7. Binnenhof Blue, Organic Studio Cobalt, and Cosmic Cobalt all appear a good bit more purple on paper than in my scan.

8. The PR Cosmic Cobalt took forever to dry. It just sat in a small puddle on the Rhodia paper for a loooong time. It and the Binnenhof Blue were similar in brightness to “the ink whose name shall not be disparaged”, though they are more purple than that ink.

Despite my only partially successful attempt to capture on a scanner what I see on paper, I hope this comparison will be of at least some use.

I don't have a single one of your blue inks, so it was an interesting look.

Blue is my favorite color as well... and I too have more ink than I'm likely to use in this life, but still want more. :headsmack:

I usually have at least half of the pens in rotation inked with some shade of blue, vintage and/or modern. :cloud9:

Hi,

Is the unnamed ink Parker Penman Sapphire?

You have 18 blue inks and not one is Montblanc Midnight Blue, someone call a medic!

Yeah I wish I would have tried to get involved in some of the Akkerman group buys, especially on the blues.
