Pen Stores In Malaysia

i'm headed to malaysia in a few weeks and i figured i should do a bit of research on local brick and mortar shops to visit while i'm there. i found a bit of information that was posted a little over a year ago concerning the topic here.

on a side note, trying to find decent pen shops has been hard for me in the past as well. last time i was in the market for this sort of information, i came up with little to nothing just before i went to taipei for the holiday. even though i only found one shop close to where i was staying, i was thoroughly pleased. (the owner was so cool! i would definitely vouch for his shop. we talked for hours about pens and he even let me try pens from his personal collection! as a matter of fact, the following is a testament of how cool he is!)

so i guess i'm asking for stories. when i went to taipei, i found a thread on this forum that helped me a lot, so i'd be interested in getting a malay info variant up as well. do my fellow FPNers have any experiences with pen shops around Kuala Lumpur? are there any pen lovers living in malaysia out there who read this forum who would be interested in hanging out?

I drove to KL last August looking for pen shops and found that there are 2 to be worth considering, they are

PenGallery (M) Sdn Bhd

76 Jalan Raja Chulan

50200, Kuala Lumpur

Malaysia

Tel: +603-2164-5600

KS Gill (M) Sdn Bhd

325 Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman

50100, Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territory

Malaysia

Hotline : 6012-686-1025

Tel : +603-2693-6902, 603-2698-9782

First thing to note is that PenGallery is close on Sat and Sun, there is a stationary shop on the same level which also sells Fountain Pens. Other then the 2 locations, KLCC has a Kinokuniya which also sells some of the Japanese brands (The Stationary section for them and the Isetan are from a Japanese Stationary Company with its base in Singapore called NBC. This BTW is the same company as the Maido shops in San Francisco but their range is on the lower end.

I would look out for the cheaper Pilots on sale as I think I paid about MYR 70 (USD$23) for a Pilot Knight and a 74G for MYR 16 (USD$5.20). Hope this helps.

From The Sunny Island of Singapore

Straits Pen Distributors and Dealers of Craft Rinkul, JB Perfect Pen Flush, Ohto Japan, Parker, Pelikan, Pilot Pen, Private Reserve Inks, Schrade Tactical Pens, Smith & Wesson Pens, Noodler's Ink LLC Pens, TWSBI Inc and Waterman in Singapore

Disclosure: I do nib work for others and am affiliated with those which do. I also sell and represent certain brands of pens.

There's also an old shop in Petaling Street called Lee's Pen Service. Its current owner (Mr Lee :) is the second generation running it.

Another fellow member from FPN visited it sometime ago and wrote about it here.

Lee's Pen Service

Lot G-8, Bangunan Pak Peng,

75 Jalan Petaling,

50000 Kuala Lumpur,

Malaysia.

+1 for pengallery. I've been there a few times and have always come away with a truly fine pen at a great price. Their online service is fantastic as well. I ordered a Conway Stewart the other day. The pen was shipped out via DHL that same afternoon and it was at my door in Manila 12 hours later.

Just make sure, if and when you go to the physical store, that you know the online prices (or have access to the prices on your phone), because the in-store prices are considerably higher. They'll give you the online price if you ask them--but you have to ask.

Been to KS Gills for their ink. Was treated a bit coldly, but I was in a little of a hurry that day. Didn't want to get caught in the "Oh, lookie, shiny!" situation. :headsmack:

Thanks to this thread I visited all three stores during my recent visit. Here's my experience:

1. Lee's pen service - great guy, but small collection of pens. He's mostly a wholesaler and repair guy. I didn't get what I was looking for

2. Pen gallery - nice store, great selection of inks! This is the place to go for inks. While he carries many brands, he had limited stock under each. So, I didn't get what I wanted here either.

3. KS Gills - this is where it worked for me! Warm staff and owner! I bought the M400 tortoise. He only had a medium like most stores but he quickly ordered a fine nib for me within 24 hours! I also picked up a 3776 and Kaweco AL stonewashed.

A tip - I found that Pelikans are way cheaper in Malaysia. I got the 400 for only $260 (compared to about 380 in US stores). It seems that the company's new onset lives in Malaysia and is promoting it in the country.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
