Nakaya Tamenuri Aged Photos?

Does anyone have any pictures of their Nakaya Tamenuri Pens that have changed colors? I am curious to see how the pens look after two years or more. I am also interested in the solid color Urushi pens and how their colors change.

I am guessing that if they changed colours, the change will be so subtle that it won't be captured by a camera...

I have two decapods, the first in aka-tamenuri (owned for almost two years), the other kuro-tamenuri (just under a year). At this point, the the color changes in either after fairly regular use is still very slight. My camera definitely won't pick it up just yet (maybe next year?).

And Limenweim, I love your avatar... Knowledge is power, guard it well. For the The Great Father and The Emperor. ;)

You read my mind! I was to post the same subject, but you saved me the work ;)

Mine is the Aka-Tamenuri.

They are very subtle, but you can see a difference: the first photo is when I bought it (end of 2006)

The aperture was set up to portray what my naked eye was seeing and the lamp is the same between these two photographs, so.....no cheating!:P

Sonia,

Thank you for the pictures. I can clearly see the change with your pictures. The color really gains depth as time passes. I like the color aged much better.

Do you use the Nakaya pen everyday? Is it kept out on your desk when not in use?

I was trying to decide between an Ishime finish or the Tamenuri. Your pictures have me leaning towards the Tamenuri finish.

Hi Justin!

I use this pen quite frequently at home but not at the office that much. But when I go and do rounds at the hospital, it follows me most of the time. I always keep it inside its kimono and in a drawer and this pen is almost always inked. Not that my home office is too bright, but I also keep it away from being exposed too long to the lamps light.....just in case.

I like the shades of black and red but the kuro-tamenuri was too dark for my choice at the time I bought this one.

Go for it, it is a gorgeous pen and excellent writer (mine is the flexible nib).

There are a huge amount of factors that would influence the colour of these pens - the colour of the urushi used, the artist who paints the pens and the exposure to sunlight are some that I can think off imediately.

Here's a picture of a Danitrio Tamenuri Genkai that is a few years old and a Danitrion Tamenuri Short Octagon that was a more recent purchase. Is the colour variation due to age? Who knows!

Nice, Sonia and Siv.

Sonia, you've enjoyed your Nakaya for nearly five years -- ooo! I don't know why that's cool, but it is. I got my first Nakaya -- the black-on-black Piccolo -- in April, 2008, and then I didn't even enjoy it until I got the M nib in February last year. Such wasted time!

Thanks for posting the photos!

Argh. There's a page on the nakaya.org website that shows how urushi wears over time, but I can't find it. The Nakaya website is kindv like falling down a rabbit hole labyrinth. A very lovely rabbit hole labyrinth.

Lisa:

I've spent about an hour or more trying to find the link but this is worse than a rabbit's hole! This is like the "Bermuda Triangle" that takes to different dimensions (links!). Nope, couldn't find it.

This Nakaya has received a "pela" [pail-uh] which means in slang Puertorrican a beating -not of misuse but of overuse!

I'm psyching myself up to save all that money for the chinkoku black and gold (like the Saints team :P). I'm still debating the size. Do you have a piccolo? You see, I have the long[est] cigar and it's difficult for me to visualize a smaller size. I don't like small pens usually.

Chris, thank you for finding these links. When I look at the pen example http://www.nakaya.org/etamesample.html of the green, I am a bit confused. Is this the Heiki Tamenuri? I have not noticed a Heiki Tamenuri pen turning this color from people's photos. This must have been exposed to UV light for a year.

I wonder if UV is damaging to Urushi or if it just ages quicker. Perhaps a better way to phrase this "If I put a Urushi pen in the sun everyday for a little while will it age the pen quicker?" or "Will the urushi layer crack?"

Siv,

I think you make a good point. Is it aging or just the color of the pen. Perhaps, it may have to do with the Urushi itself. Some urushi may age quicker.

I am pretty sure direct exposure to UV ray (i.e. strong sunlight) would spell doom to the urushi layers. I guess better to avoid exposure as much as you can.
