I Want To Convert My Pilot Prera Into An Eyedropper

Hi everybody,

I want to convert my Pilot Prera into an eyedropper. Is the O-ring really necessary ? Will the pure sillicone grease not be sufficient ? Please share your opinion and experience.

Cheers

Patrick

I would say that the "o" ring is needed to prevent leaks. Good luck with your project!

Fast, Cheap, Good... you can choose two.

No for the Prera, you should use an O ring. Remember you only have 3 solid threads to keep the ink back, three rows of threads is no enough for my comfort zone, but YMMV. The metal band is removable and that will definitely give you enough room to use the O ring.

I did not use an o-ring. Silicone grease only. And there are six solid threads, not three. Left the metal band on too. No problem so far.

I have no 'O' rings on mine either, only grease. It has not leaked since I '"eyedroppered" it! BTW It holds about 4 cc's ink so you might want to like what you put in. It also makes a nice weight and balanced pen with all that ink. Great little pen and for 25USD!!!

I think I'm going to try this out. I've got three Prera's and I'm itching to try this out on my medium nib blue. Good thing my Baystate Blue arrives in a few days. Time to do some dilution and dive right in.

You might want to be careful since I know some people have had issues with the material Pilot uses for their feeds combined with BSB. The dye and the plastic don't seem to be compatible. This sometimes happens since dye is an organic compound and some of them bind to certain plastics well or cause the chemical structures in the plastic to come apart chemically. (not pH related) Take care and be careful.

I've been using the Baystate Blue exclusively in this Pilot Prera and it's been great. No problems with the feed (so far). I'm concerned about doing the eyedropper method, but I'm going to give it a go with a cheaper pen (Pilot Petit 1) first and see how it works with that plastic before I put it in the Prera. Thanks for the advice.

Hi Everybody:

I've been considering buying a Prera demonstrator and was wondering about eyedropper conversion. Glad to hear that it is doable. I have two other questions. First one is that there's an option of a Calligraphy nib. I'd like to get an idea how "medium" this is. I love the B option in my Pilot 78g which writes like a Western M but with nice line variation. Its super fun.

I'm wondering if the Calligraphy nib with Prera is similar and if I don't like the nib can I possibly switch it back to a medium? Lastly, people here have mentioned getting a Prera for only $25 or thereabouts. The lowest I'm seeing it for on eBay is about $32 plus shipping from Japan so if there's a source for a lower price I'd like to know about it. All feedback appreciated.

I wound up purchasing my Prera Demonstrator with Calligraphy nib on Amazon. It was about $32. Looking forward to seeing how that nib compares to the B nib on my Pilot 78g which I love. If anyone has any experience with these two nibs and pens, I'd love to hear about it.

As an aside I'm still relatively new here on this site and would love to learn how to access my own posts and responses to them since my last login. Hoping there's some easy way to do this.

I'm about to get a new pen, and the Prera is on the short list. Eyedropper-ability is key to my decision.

It sounds as though the Prera can be eyedroppered..over the past several years, have those who have converted their Preras to eyedroppers had issues, or is the Prera a solid eyedropper candidate?

Thank you!

Try j-subculture, like a Japanese Amazon. My ivory prera cost US $ 20, plus a couple of bucks postage.

I just purchased a Pilot Prera on Amazon for 30$ and with Prime option. I was also curious about eyedropping it sufficiently since it would create a great reservoir of ink, better weight and balance, and the fact that it's a demonstrator gives it those perks as well.

Respectfully, I ask. Please share your reason for desiring such conversion.

I didn't use an O ring but make sure you put the silicone grease

on the threads at the back end of the barrel as well as at the section.

I have a Prera...excellent pen. Initially I had it as an eye dropper. I used silicone grease and an o-ring; goulet calls this part the preppy o-ring, but the rings work with other pens.

Id say the prera was for me successful as an eye dropper, however, sometimes at the beginning of a writing session, a drop of ink would form at the end of the feed. I'd wipe it off and keep writing without issue.

If my prera were exclusively a stay-at-home writer, I'd have kept it as an eye dropper. I wish there were a technique to make it dribble-free but it seems to be on a per-pen basis.

I'll keep watching this thread.
