seriously, I do think I understand what you're saying.

I'll confess that I am still trying to understand it myself The knob control damping may not have been the best analogy. When two dry surfaces slide against each other, there is always some level of microvibration. I presume that the intensity and frequency content of these vibrations is what makes us percieve a nib toothy or scratchy.

Close enough. I am an AA (Aero/Astro). But my formal major is almost irrelevant. The work I do most resembles what one may call computational physics, and I happen to work mostly on Maxwell's equations, so there is a definite connection to EE there
