FS: Vintage Inkwells & Other Assorted Goodies!

Greetings from DocNib's PenEmporium! What do you get as a neat gift for somebody who is hard to buy for and very picky about their pens? How about an inkwell, one made out of porcelain, a material that has withstood the test of time! I've got just such an item, matter of fact, a number of them dating from the early to mid-1800's up to the 1920's...and all are in superb condition! Let's take a look...

1) YELLOW WARE porcelain figural w/original double inserts & "resting" dog motif (c. 1850-60), heavy yellow-glazed surface with traces of gilding still visible (after approx. 150-years, to be expected!), approx. 6-1/2"L x 4-1/4"W base & 3-7/8"H at top of dog's head, gilded-edged removeable inkwell and sander inserts completely intact & in excellent shape, 2-quill holes between inserts (for resting dip-pens), several pin-point chips at bottom edging of base otherwise in excellent shape, overall condition is "Very Good +"...$100.00!

2) DELFT-STYLE glazed porcelain double insert inkwell w/loose lids with finials, inserts and 2-quill holes (c. 1880's), stylized floral design in what I believe they call a Transfer-Pattern, maker's mark on bottom is "R." but I haven't been able to find it yet (see pic) in my books or on-line, oval shaped base is 5-1/2"L x 3"W x 2-1/2"H, both inserts and lids have some "crackling" to glaze but this is to be expected after 100+ years, inserts & lids in primo condition as is base unit w/only two pin-point chip-marks on glazed top-edge (barely noticeable), overall condition is quite Excellent and BEAUTIFUL...$150.00!

3) Staffordshire (England) pottery "bird nest" inkwells w/bird, egg & snake motif and quill hole(s) (c. 1860-70), each one stands approx. 2-1/2" high and have 1-1/4" to 1-3/4" diameter bases, colorful beaded overlay on each, mother bird is unaware of approaching snake on all except for one (double hole) and eggs have hatched on one of the single-hole versions, I've owned over a dozen of these and no two are alike since a number of different Staffordshire artisans produced these for the various studios in the region, #1 & #3 in the first pic have small "maker's marks" on the bottoms while #2 & #4 have none visible (not uncommon to find w/out marks!), some crackling in glaze on smooth surfaces and minor wear visible on some of the smooth colored areas (on bird & snake), even with the minor wear overall condition of each piece is still considered Excellent...

6) Staffordshire (England) pottery inkwell in the shape of a house w/2-quill holes (c. 1850), 4-1/4"L x 3-1/4"W x 5"H, colorful beaded overlays on roof-trim, around chimney and on 3-bushes out front, even crackling on all smooth surfaces, several tiny "hairline" split lines near base on left side but still have glaze over them (no danger of breaking), very minor wear on outer surfaces, overall condition is "Excellent -"...$105.00!

7) J.A. HENCKELS/TWINWORKS Burgundy leather & Purple velvet-lined hard case w/asst'd. dip-pen handles & 2-large engraved dip-pen nibs (c. 1800's), case was probably for some type of Henckels fine cutlery set & is quite solid for protecting it's contents, has push-button snap latch, 10-center loops (5-top & 5-bottom) for keeping items in place plus one large loop on bottom left corner, "rope" pattern border edging around top & bottom padded velvet, leather-hinging fully intact and not stretched out (top still rests in near upright position when open), some wear & tear on outer leather surfaces...

4-Mother-Of-Pearl handled dip-pens w/out nibs, no names but one is marked "1" & another "4"

1-Retractable Ivory handled dip-pen w/out nib, no name

1-Sterling Silver "Pineapple" pattern dip-pen handle w/ nib, no name but imprinted PAT. APPL'D FOR STERLING, couple small dings in smooth hanldle part

1-Large 14K No.4 Culver Page Hoyne & Co. floral dip-pen nib w/tubular BCHR ferrule attached to base of nib, both tips have some bends/crimps at the ends & right tip shorter than left (might be broken off but is fairly smooth on edge)

1-Sterling Silver "repousse" & cable-twist pattern dip-pen holder w/hallmark of 925/1000 and a "J" inside a diamond shape, could be E.S. Johnson from the 1890's, several dents & a tiny split in center of handle before repousse starts, very end of taper shows some pin-point dings

1-Edward Todd 14K-No. 4 floral engraved tubular base dip-pen nib, tip has some crimping/bending at the very end but not cracked

8) Early blown-glass medical syringe w/cigar-shaped wood "travelling" case (c. mid-late 1800's?), fairly thick walled so well protected from breakage, thought there was a pen in it when I first spotted it in a dark antique shop showcase but still a cool & unusual item, thick/wadded fiber packing at end of plunger, no needle...$25.00!

8) Early blown-glass medical syringe w/cigar-shaped wood "travelling" case (c. mid-late 1800's?), fairly thick walled so well protected from breakage, thought there was a pen in it when I first spotted it in a dark antique shop showcase but still a cool & unusual item, thick/wadded fiber packing at end of plunger, no needle...$25.00/REDUCED TO $20.00!
