Just another Nakaya Aka-tamenuri Piccolo

Ever since reading Phthalo's (Laura) wonderful review of her Nakaya Piccolo, I just knew that I had to get one! Seeing that Laura's already done such a wonderful review of the pen, I'm just going to post 3 quick and dirty pics of the reddish-red tamenuri Nakaya. I like my first pic the best, so I'm going to save that for last. All 3 pictures were taken with an old 5 Mp Sony F707 instead of my digital SLR. Now, on to the first pic.

In this shot, I exposed for the white paper. As such, the pen came out a tad underexposed. I wanted folks to catch a glimpse of the paperwork that came with the pen - a document showing the names of the craftsmen who performed the various stages in the pen's "creation" and their respective seals. As always, feel free to expand the photo to see it at its full resolution.

In the picture below, the cream parts of the paper came out a little dark. However, the lustre of the pen is starting to become more evident here.

My very first pic is posted below, and I think it captures the gloss and lustre of Nakaya quite nicely. :D It's the best 2-dimensional representation I could accomplish to illustrate the beauty of the pen's finish, short of sending the pen out to all FPNer's, and that's not happening!

And for those of you who have not had the pleasure of reading it, I've linked Laura's review here: Nakaya Piccolo review

Oooooh... delicious! I especially like photo two... though three is pretty darn cool! :D

Very, very nice... it makes me want an Aka-Tamenuri Desk Pen more than ever now...

What nib did you get for your Piccolo?

(DAMN I should be getting a commission from Nakaya! :P )

I have the same reaction to your excellent photos as I did to Laura's, especially to the pen capped: I really, really like the shape of this pen! It is just very compelling for some reason, perhaps due to the compact feel, perhaps because of the shape of the cap and barrel ends.

And of course, tanemuri is my favorite of all these urushi finishes! Congratulations on the pen!

Thank you for the kind words, Freeloader (great name!) and Dan. Glad I could share. It certainly is difficult trying to do justice to the pen's fine finish. In spite of its dark finish, it's got an ethereal glow all of its own.

...random aside - I still have some 30 rolls of unused, long-expired Kodachrome 64 film (35mm). They have been frozen since 2009. No idea why I have held on to them for this long, but I guess I'm hoping for a miracle. I too have never developed colour film but I still d&p my B&W to this day. As a passion, of course.

Thanks for the info (I only used B&W film and learned to process that).   Boy -- the stuff I learn here!  Just continually astounded at the depth and breadth of knowledge in this community! Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

      >Well, I knew people who were photography majors in college, and I'm pretty sure that at least some of them were doing photos in color,<   I'm sure they were, and my answer assumes that. It just wasn't likely to have been Kodachrome.  It would have been the films I referred to as "other color films." (Kodachrome is not a generic term for color film. It is a specific film that produces transparencies, or slides, by a process not used for any other film. There are other color trans

@Ceilidh -- Well, I knew people who were photography majors in college, and I'm pretty sure that at least some of them were doing photos in color, not just B&W like I learned to process.  Whether they were doing the processing of the film themselves in one of the darkrooms, or sending their stuff out to be processed commercially?  That I don't actually know, but had always assumed that they were processing their own film.
