Caran d'Ache Colours of the Earth

When I found out that Caran d'Ache has launched a new line of inks, I could not wait to see them and perhaps get a bottle to try out myself. My wish was fulfilled today by a bottle of their Grand Canyon (i.e. greyish brown...).

 

Very briefly, Caran d'Ache just launched a line of 9 colour inks all tagged by associative colours of the earth. So you have, Saffron, Sunset, Amazon Green, and so on. While some of the colours are by no means distinctively novel, the "caribbean sea" colour is a nice greenish-blue and the "grand canyon" I bought has a nice "ash-grey" tone to the medium brown ink (please see the bad picture I took with my only camera I have at the moment).

 

Good flow so far and some indicative shading. Beyond the attractive marketing genius of this line, the next most beautiful thing of these inks is the bottle--ahem...crystal like ink well--they come in. There is only 30ml of ink in each bottle and the ink seems to be completely suspended within the cubic glass inkwell, making it one of the most, if not the most beautiful inkwell to date in the various lines of commercial branded inks.

 

What's not to like? The price. For 30ml, the bottle of ink costs near to $12 USD from Takashimaya departmental store in Singapore (as compared to a 50ml bottle of PR for $7.60 USD). Other than that, while the inkwell design is most elegantly shaped, it is rather shallow making it a challenge to fill up when the ink level drops drastically.

I like this and the other Cda Colours of the Earth inks. While the bottle is nice, most people would prefer to spend their money on ink instead of the bottle (at least, after you have one bottle anyway). Hopefully the marketing people will figure that out sooner rather than later.

Grand Canyon is a favorite brown. I'm glad you mentioned Takashimaya, as I'll be in Singapore next week. I assume Kinokuniya? Enjoy your ink - and your nifty Emotica.

Count yourself lucky! We're paying £7.95 for 30ml in the UK, which is almost $16 USD. It's a great colour, though, so I'm happy to be fleeced.

Thanks Leigh . No, the ink was purchased literally in Takashimaya in the men's section where you will see dunhill, dupont, caran d'ache and associated leather accessories. Honestly I cannot yet understand the sequestering of these fountain pens from the rest. But I guess these brands are truly fashion accessories than more 'writerly' ones like Parkers and Sheaffers sold in another part of the store!

in fact in singapore, the ink bottles that are sold here are cheaper than other parts from other countries and compared with online stores. if you guys looking for noodler's ink in singapore you guys want to try aesthetic bay at funan digitalife mall. hope this helps. if i'm not wrong aesthetic bay has caran'd ache.

I don't know how I missed this review. I had been considering the Caran d'Ache "Grand Canyon" and was curious to see the color. I am a fan of brown inks and this one looks really interesting. I am definitely going to include some in my next ink order.
