1. Take a short length of Sellotape (approx 60-70mm should be enough).

2. Stick the tape across the nib such that it does not touch either the feed or the section.

3. Holding the pen level in one hand with the nib uppermost, wrap the tape around the index finger of the other and apply a gentle downwards force.

4. Slide the tape away from the pen body and the nib will come with it!

5. The replacement nib can just be slid on by hand.

Anyone have a picture to illustrate the tape-method? Sounds easy enough, but a picture might help a bit. The picture in the above linked thread is no more.

There probably aren't too many pictures because it isn't worth that much effort. Just empty pen, dry the nib off, stick the tape onto the nib and pull. The long axis of the tape should be in the same direction as the long axis of the pen. Grab the barrel with one hand and the end of the tape with the other, then pull hands apart along the long axis.

 

I don't know what Sellotape is but I use Scotch tape. I think it is virtually impossible to damage anything doing it this way. If you do it wrong, the only thing that will happen is that the tape will rip or peel off.

Pendemonium and Swisher Pens also carry Lamy Al-Star/Safari nibs.

I would also add that it's not always necessary to use tape: the nib on my Vista slides off if I just take hold of it and pull (firmly, but gently). I know this because the first thing I did when I took it out of its packaging on the bus on the way home from buying it was try that. :embarrassed_smile: They slide back on again really easily, too.

Isn't this also the way nibs can be swapped on the school pens Pelikan sells (like Pelikano and Future)?

The nibs of the Pelikano and Future are pulled out together with the feed, so it's a bit different. But quite easy, too.

Once I found out just how easy it was to swap nibs on the Safari (and Logo, and Studio) I find myself doing it quite frequently. It's almost like getting a new pen each time.

Hmm, this method is not working for me. The scotch tape just simply pulls off the nib... the nib doesn't move at all... what am I doing wrong?

I use my thumbnail and fingernail to slide the nib off. You have to get "in the edge" and then firmly, but gently slide it off as the above poster mentioned.

Even easier than that? I use a wide 1/4" rubber band. Use the rubber band to grip the nib on the flank. Pull it off the feed front-ways, towards the nib's tip. Reinsert the new nib in reverse.

 

I swap nibs in about 10-15 seconds on my Safaris.

I use a pair of padded jeweler's pliers -- have examined my nibs before and after -- no damage at all. But, YMMV.

I think pendemonium.com and/or swisherpens.com sell 1.1 mm italic nibs for the Lamy Al-Star and Safari for $12.

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
