Clash Of The Titans

Just rinsed out my M1000 for an ink change and decided to take these comparative photos.

Capped, the 149 is slightly longer:

The M1000 is larger uncapped.

The slightly bigger cap of the 149:

The 149 has a slightly longer nib, it also depends on how deeply you set the nib into the freeder case during service.

The slightly slimmer and longer section of the M1000:

In conclusion, I can say that the pens are worthy rivals of each other, nearly equal in size, they differ in writing feel and ergonomics and differ hugely in their inner mechanisms.

I hope this was useful.

Cheers!

Hari

Nice M1000 - is that a custom binde, or a model I'm not familiar with?

Wow, it's amazing. I'm not a fan of the usual Pelikan stripe body, but I would definitely buy that green (if I could afford an m1000)!

Is the 149 as heavy as the M1000? And how do they compare balance-wise?

I don't have any mechanism to weigh them precisely. However, to me they seem to weigh about the same, capped.

I use both unposted (a rarity for me) and I really prefer the balance of the M1000. The 149 feels so back-end-heavy to me.

Regards, greg

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

The 149 seems heavier, I have not weighed them but I am only talking about feel. I use both the pens un-posted. The difference lies in the feel of the nibs and also the grip, the slightly longer one on the M1000 is very comfortable, the 149 makes it up by offering a wider grip. The M1000 nib is way soft, the 149 nib is not very soft but is slightly springy, both the pens are lovable in their own way.

Best is to try both extensively at a shop.

Best,

Hari

i have both pens, and indeed both are impressive in their own way. still, for daily use and comfort in the hand, i still gravitate toward the 149.

Check out my blog and my pens

Thanks, Greg and Hari. Hard for me to imagine using a pen that's bigger or heavier than the M800. I thought the 149 might be lighter than the M1000, but I guess not.

I can't remember his name- John...-did a great chart with weights and measurements, including centers of gravity. Here are the weights of the 149 and M1000-

149, uncapped pen=19.25G, cap=11

M1000 uncapped =23.25, cap=8.2

Some people say they march to a different drummer. Me? I hear bagpipes.

Hari, is the 149 also rhodium plated? The furniture looks silverish to me?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
