Two Royal Portable Typewriters 1930's-40's

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

So I have two Royal Portable typewriters that I simply have not been able to spend time on fixing up a little. Though both of them need a little work to be fully operational, they are really beautiful machines, and the work needed is not impossible to find somebody to do it, or even do it yourself. The feed rolls are shot and need to be replaced, and the platens may need to be redone, but otherwise the working parts of these typewriters are functional. What this means is that they can type but not have the paper be able to move through the typewriter. There are a few typewriter roll, platen makers still around, West Coast Platen Company is one of the most well known, and can be found at: http://www.shopplaten.com/index.php?cPath=...6a44b86baca5270

In addition, the feet of both typewriters are hardened and some are missing chunks out of them which is very common in old typewriters before restoration. They all look very stable and none are missing to such a degree that they do not do their purpose. Repairing these might be a little more tricky, but a few tips are located here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~catch55/tech/page3.html.

Individual condition descriptions follow

Royal Portable Woodgrain:

This is a beautiful collection of colors and Royal's attempt to make their typewriters look as if they were made of wood. The typewriter is in good mechanical condition, but has a few cosmetic conditions in addition to above. The paint of the typewriter must of been through a number of temperature changes as there is a crackling of it throughout the typewriter. Even with this, the paint looks like it is pretty stable with only the smallest of spots chipped here and there. The crackling is not so noticeable from a distance. The spool protector on the left has a blemish on the paint, but it is not overly noticeable. The space bar key is a little darkened, looks like a little dirt got under the glass of the key, and just needs to be wiped off. The spools work and advance the ribbon. I am asking $70 for this typewriter, including shipping.

Royal Portable Forest Green:

This typewriter is in great cosmetic condition with small spots where the paint chipped here and there. All the keys function and is mechanically functioning. This is a really beautiful typewriter and would stand out on any desk or table. The spools are in great condition and the ribbon functions properly. No keys stick, and all function properly. I am asking $80 for this typewriter including shipping.

I apologize for the quality of these photos. I had an accident with my digital camera ending up in a lake, and the sensor appears to be a little damaged. I will try to get better photos, but if you have any questions related to the typewriters, payment, shipping and such please PM me and I will get back to you promptly.

FP Ink Orphanage-Is an ink not working with your pens, not the color you're looking for, is never to see the light of day again?!! If this is you, and the ink is in fine condition otherwise, don't dump it down the sink, or throw it into the trash, send it to me (payment can be negotiated), and I will provide it a nice safe home with love, and a decent meal of paper! Please PM me!<span style='color: #000080'>For Sale:</span> TBA

Those are really nice Royals. I would be all over them but I've got a blue one. Though the green one is very tempting.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
