Some photos of my Advocate ED. This is a large fountain pen approx 61/2 inches capped. It has a proportionate size 12 steel nib.

Where did you buy this Hari?

 

These pens are available in Hyderabad, India. The Advocate also comes in a plain ebonite version. I had the cap trim rings removed. Here are some of its snaps along with a M800 and a steel cap Advocate.

I always keep my black Advocate filled with Ruby Red ink on my desk. The pens hold approx 3.5ml of ink (varies from pen to pen depending upon the depth of the bore.) The pens are reasonably smooth, have no dry out problems, hence always start on the first stroke even after being unopened for weeks.

Hari, first your photos are nice and you seems to be hooked to Indian pen which is marvellaous!

Frankly speaking I had no idea of so many varieties of Indian pens available! Your photos have made me purchase my first two Ratnam pens. I am scheduled to get here in Africa on monday! So, my sincere thanks to you!

Secondly I learnt about Brahmam Pens, now Advocate pens!! Wality I came to know through this forum!

Is the black one ebonite too? How do they relate to Ratnam pens in terms of quality, finish etc?

Thank you for the comments. I too am in the journey of discovery about various Indian pen craftsmen. It really is a small scale cottage industry here and the craft seems to be dying out due to lack of demand. At my end I am trying to acquire representative examples and daily users which I might not be able to get after some time. A good example of this is the Hyderabadi company called Misak whose pens by chance I discovered in a shop and I now hear that the shop itself is closed.

 

Yes, the black one is Ebonite. As a user pen it is 100% value for money. In comparison to Ratnamson, Advocates come only in IP steel nibs (a size 10 gold nib would be quite costly to make too), the nibs are good but they may not have the charm of the handmade gold nibs which Mr. Ramanamurthy or Lakshmana Rao of Guider makes.

 

The Advocate is generally made with a SS cap trim ring, but I had them make it w/o the ring. I have also seen the Advocates in mottled brown and green, but the plain black is the winner in my eyes.

 

Do let us all know when you receive your Ratnamsons and possibly do a review?

Hi Hari...these Advocate photos are wonderful yaar...I have two of them Advocate pens...the black one and the one with the steel cap...I am currently using the black ebonite...and as you said, the flow is superb and even after 5-6 days of non-use, the ink doesnt dry and you can pick up from where you left off...in fact, i visited Deccan Pen Stores at Sec'bad today and bought the steel cap advocate along with another ebonite pen, which is black in colour and has a smooth surface...not the usual ebonite surface...it is a cartridge fountain pen...it looks good and I intend using it from tomorrow...I also told the person there about FPN and that you had posted such wonderful pictures of their pens...he was visibly happy...he said their website is under construction and will be up and running in about 3 months and then they will be able to process orders from outside too...hope they get it done soon so that our friends here can get their quota of advocates...

I recently got a couple of smaller sized Advocate pens made to order. The smaller size makes it easier to carry in the shirt pocket. The posted length of the smaller and the standard sized pen remains nearly the same and so is the ink capacity at 3.5ml.

Are you referring to the barrel? The feeds are solid black ebonite.

Hi All,

 

Here are some photos of the Advocate Junior. This pen is 1/2 inch shorter and quite slimmer than the full sized Advocate. Previously I had got a custom made Mini Advocate which was the same diameter as std Advocate but 1/2 inch shorter making it a pocketable size. The Junior is 5 3/4 inch capped and 6 3/4 inch posted and uses a #5 steel nib.

 

The upper most pen is the Std Advocate, the next one is the mini Advocate and the last two are Junior Advocates. The junior is also available in the Tiger stripes pattern.
