What Ink For Cthulhu Month

Inner Prop

Recommended Posts

I want to use an ink this month that is evocative of H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu. I will probably only use a sampler sized amount so something that comes in a sample would be perfect.

Additionally I'm a cheapskate so I don't think I want to buy a whole bottle.

I'm thinking something green-black or green soap stone-ish or maybe something bruise purple.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Green-black? Consider Noodler's Air Corps Blue-Green (it's green-black, despite the name)..

Yes, I was thinking of that.

It makes me think of Roswell and Project Blue Book and Foo Fighters etc.

On the other hand it makes me think of the Battle of Britain and other heroic air battles not to be disrespected.

Okay, it's on the short list.

I love Noodler's El Lawrence for a swampy, murky green, and it's one of the Eternal series to boot. I haven't used Diamine Salamander myself, but it looks like it is in the same neighbourhood as El Lawrence. Both should be available as samples from Goulet.

Diamine Salamander -- it's more green than El Lawrence (which is more grayish brown).

Come to think, The best color I can think of for Cthulhu -- not of course having actually *read* any Lovecraft -- would some sort of sickly yellow green. So my vote would be for De Atramentis Sahara Grey.

Know nothing about Cthulhu, never bothered to read that. And, now that I'm in law, I don't have time to read that which isn't law related.

El Lawrence isn't really a greenish brown. I've heard/read it described as used motor oil, and that's a color that I would assign to it. Either that, or my bottle is defective.

Have heard/read that Zhivago is "swamp water green," but have yet to achieve that with any of my pens.

Ask Cthulhu!

I did, but unfortunately, Cthulhu's answer was unpronouncable.

I think the list so far is:

  • Noodler's - Air Corp (images of government coverup)
  • Noodler's - Nightshade (sounds appropriate)
  • Noodler's - Zhivago (swamp water green)
  • Noodler's - El Lawrence (either greenish brown or motor oil)
  • Diamine - Salamander
  • De Atramentis - Sahara Grey (sickly yellow green)
  • Kobe - Tamon Grey

Hmm... nightshade. If I lived in a more temperate climate, I'd make a garden of Nightshade and Foxglove :)

It really is too bad that Zhivago just almost always goes down on the page as a black for me. I even placed large drops on paper towel stacks to do crude chromatography to reassure myself that there actually is green in there, somewhere. Would get a solid "core" spot of black with a fringe of green on it.

One would be thinking a good gooey squid-ink black.

Private Reserve Velvet Black or Diamine Onyx Black

Or perhaps a nice sepia?

For an acidic yellow-green, how about Rohrer and Klingner Alt-Goldgrun?

How about De Atramentis "Giacomo Puccini" which is a rather brownish purple, or Nooders "Purple", so dark it's nearly back, or Diamine "Salamander", that's a rather swampy green... Lol, Ive been discussing Kraken inks with a freind of mine, it is fun
