I will be going - first time to the Sheffield Show.

Looking forward to it

How does this show compare to the Northern Pen Show? Has anyone been to both?

Compares very well John, similar numbers of sellers etc.I dont know if John Sorowka will be there or not but half the time the time the social side of these shows is half the fun.

It would be nice to see John Sorowka, I have a nib I would like him to look at.

But Beachwood is right ,the best bit of the show is when we FPN'ers have a chat about pens we have purchased, brought along, plus paper and journals etc.

The question is, how do we know who we are...? Do we need a pink carnation or a secret handshake ?

There may be FPN stickers at the door but if not be a pen tart like me and talk to everyone!

Fair point, I will listen for the pen tarts well !!

I normally try to set some money aside for these events, but I don't have a specific aim for at this show

Does anyone else have something they are particularly looking for ?

Hi,

Sorry I'm a little late picking up on this thread, if anyone can call into our Shop, F.G.Thomas 25 Surrey St Sheffield next week, we have a voucher that can get 2 people into the show for the price of 1, they will be available until 5pm next Saturday.

Hopefully will see you all at the show or in the shop if you get the chance.

Normally the show time is 10am to 4pm.

Cheers

Gary

If anyone is going by train, it's about 10 minutes walk from the station. The Copthorne Hotel is next to the Sheffield United Football Ground at Bramhall Lane, so it's well-signposted and easy to find. If you have to ask for directions, ask for the football ground! If you're driving, there's quite a lot of on-street pay and display parking in the area. It's a long time since I've been there on a Sunday, and I'm not sure how busy it's likely to be.

The hotel is in central Sheffield, but not really the City Centre, ie not where the main shopping centre is, so don't make the mistake of walking all the way up the hill to the city centre.

Sheffield's (smallish) Chinatown is about 2 minutes walk away on London Road, so if you want some lunch, head there for some noodles or dim sum. It's probably nicer than anything else you'll find in the area - and no, I'm not on commission from any of the places there!

If you're on a fixed time train ticket and need to kill time before you go home, the Millenium Gallery is worth a look. It's about 5 minutes walk from the station. And it's free if you've spent all your money on pens.

Steven thank for all that - I call it essential information.

I had a quick look around - John Sorowka kindly tweaked a couple of Dani Trio nibs , and I bought a Lamy 80 (precursor to a Lanm 2000 ?) and a nice Pelikan 400 tortoise, which is stamped export on the Binde , above the Germany wording Nice soft/flexi nib. So I have things to investigate about both pens.

I had a brief chat to ALC3261, who was also purchasing pens !

Indeed!! I had John Sorowka look at 2 pens - my Omas Arco Celluloid had to go home with him for more work but I bought another from John at his WriteHere table! I also bought a couple of Sheaffers, a Parker 75 and a CS. Also reserved an Onoto!!

Met Enrique as planned and John as above. Missed whych somehow.

An enjoyable and expensive day! I came home with ink-stained fingers, a wonderful Brad Torelli 51 from Ray Walters of Vintage and Modern Pens (which Ray took such care to adjust to my writing!), an Eversharp Skyline and an old Pelikan. So I won't be reading the classifieds on this site for a while...

Drifted around and said a few words to some dealers I've come to know.

I did admire some pens but really was in no mood to do anything about it.

I was rather taken by an Omas "demonstrator" type pen which wrote very smoothly, but at £300, I thought a little expensive. A Platinum (3776?) which looks similar is half that.

I did spend the princely sum of £1 :o , but it was something I wanted - a metal collar for the eraser for a Sheaffer flattop jade pencil.

I thought it would be very easy to recognise other FPN members as they would be the ones carrying fountain pens, but alas, there was wall to wall of the things :D .

Glad others had a productive day.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
