Pelikan M101N Lizard

As mentioned earlier I have purchased the M101N yesterday, and I am quite disappointed that Pelikan did not take full initiative to replicate the 'lizard skin feeling' on the barrel sleeve unlike the 1930-40s era pen either in lizard cream or lizard gray.

IMHO, the M101N lizard skin looks like a copy from the M250 (old style) snake of the 1990s (appeared also in R200 and K200 snake).

I'm not expecting it to be the same pattern design of 101N lizard but at least if Pelikan could commission a good imitation of a modern M101N tortoise (which I personally feel it was a good reissuance), why not for a lizard.

Nonetheless the above are just my view and apologise in advance if I offend any new M101N lizard owner.

I have managed to take a few shots of the pens just to showcase my point.

Regards

Daeng

You have a very nice collection of reptilian Pelikans. Enjoy!

Now I kind of like my M101N a little less. Still really like it, though. Great comparisons. Thanks for the info.

That's definitely true - but we all had the chance to see that long before the pen was released, didn't we? The pictures were floating around for months and it was obvious that the color scheme is not the same like it was in the old days.

Still I agree with you that it's a pity that the feeling is not lizardskinlike...

Thank you for the comparison pictures!

To be honest, I prefer the color (and black cap top) of the current re-issue.

Thanks for the comparison. I reviewed my 101N lizard remake in the review section. I knew it was not an exact copy of the classic one, but I had no idea it was essentially the same as slightly older M250 snake pen. That does seem pretty lazy. I do like the looks of the 101N lizard remake more, but I'd be lying if I said I wasen't disappointed. Thanks for ruining my fun! :headsmack:

Don't think I'll be running off to get the new M800 tortoise. I've already got the M400 and I'm sure the material is the same. Maybe if it was a M1000, and if the M1000 got an upgrade to the ink capacity.

The originals were textured?

I wish Pelikan did one that was a solid color cap, patterned binde

The new reissues (and the originals) look too heavily patterned (same with the tortoise)

wont be getting the M800 tortoise as well due to the price, I'll probably look for an older M400 tortoise with springy nib instead.

I personally didn't take Pelikan's reissue as an exact copy of any specific vintage pen. I take the number scheme of the pens as more of a size, and design profile. And I would expect it to be a modern take on the vintage model.

In the case of the lizard the nib and layout is a modern take on the vintage model m101n. I have a few vintage pelikans, and aside from the nibs, I think they are way overpriced for daily usage. So for me I like the reissues because I can get a nib closer ( not exactly ) to the vintage 100nn nibs which I do like. And I won't have to worry about the pen cracking or leaking, and not being able to easily get it repaired.

If I were collecting, the vintage textured finish would be desirable, but for writing I can see how that is not desired.. Personally I don't like using pens that have decorative finishes that detract from ergonomics and functionality. ( like those pens that have fabric, or tiled ).

but it is all personal taste.

I am in market to achieve a M101N, How do you feel using it everday?

I love mine as a daily writer, but I like smaller pens and I never post. Unposted, it's a little smaller than my 400NN. But I buy pens for the nibs (or at least I try to.) and the nib on my pen is glorious. Smooth and springy. I have an EF nib from Classic Fountain Pens and I love it. It has some line variation and will show shading.

Honestly, I've had mine since last December. It is constantly inked. I did replace the nib on mine though. It am now using a 30's CN OF nib. My own doesn't get posted because it is the perfect size for my hands. It is a absolutely beautiful pen. The lizard material has depth that cannot be captured in pictures.

I use mine most days. I too replaced the nib for a gold (not rhodium plated) one as I do not like silver coloured nibs, but that is just me.
