One Ugly Pen

Recommended Posts

Shortly after I landed my first real job, John Kennedy drove a fatal stake into the hat business, so that was

one piece of haberdashery I didn't have to be concerned about. It was a relief not to have to take one off

when a woman stepped into a crowed elevator, although it was always fun to see a Fedora skimming down

the street on a windy day.

However, men did wear neck-ties, and they were and are fun. A little splash of silk to spark a sober gray suit.

I would choose a color and it would set the tone for the day. Red when being assertive, blue when being

more sober, yellow to celebrate a cheerful spring day. Soon I learned the utility of a really ugly tie. There were

some days when I simply did not want to be messed with, and I found that people kept their distance from

an ugly tie. The trick was to find one that was ugly, without being bizarre.

This pen does that.

Now that's really not so terribly awful. Some Mocha Fudge Ripple surrounding a sturdy lever box, sporting

a great big nib. But look at what happens when it's capped.

fpn_1356390760__nwbnkr_combo_-_10.jpg

Now...that is ugly. At first I thought the red cap lip replaced one that had been broken, with the band hiding

the seam. But no, this was premeditated with what can only be irritating intent. A look into the cap shows

that the dark veins are continuous from tan top to the red lip.

I can't imagine why someone would choose that combination of colors, A Hunter Green or even a brilliant

yellow, if any color at all, would be much more complimentary. Was there no oversight of the Design Department,

or was this just some end-of-the-day lark. The cheesy red cap jewel is just the cherry on this sundae.

This pen is branded New Banker. I wouldn't mess with a Loan Officer who pulled that out. In fact, I wouldn't

even do business with him.

Got an Ugly to share?

My pen is uglier than your pen.

I got to see the Montgrappa (?) Mayan Calendar pen today. It doesn't *quite* measure up in the ugly department -- from pictures I've seen, the Sly Stallone Chaos pen is probably far worse -- but it's not for lack of trying....

The overlay includes a raised (!) medallion of the calendar that has to be over an eighth of an inch thick (and it's a gianormous pen to start with). The thing must be amazingly uncomfortable for most people to write with because it's so big in diameter to start with -- it looked really heavy. And then you've got the overlay on top. :yikes:

I did *not* enquire as to the price....

I think that this is maybe the ugliest (and also maybe strangest) genuine fountain pen I have seen. It is an eye-dropper filler that I reviewed a while back, is almost impossible to hold in a writing position, and is a terrible writer - but I just had to get it when I saw it because it was so bizarre. It is called the Kyukyodo Mascot. For those who are truly masochistic, the review is here http://www.fountainp...yukyodo-mascot/

While I hesitate to disagree with a man who uses both "fedora" and "haberdashery" in a post, I find I must.

The red tip on the cap is a style reference to both bombshells, and the black bullseye on the end of Diamond Metal Diplomats.

This is just the kind of pen to tuck into your sport coat when you've chosen the hand-painted tie with the hula dancer,

Well I like the OP's pen - a lot! Shows what kind of taste I've got! ;)

Besides, to me, how it writes is far more important.

Crikey, please don't mention bullseyes........ ;)

Right, having wiped the coffee off my screen because of a wiggling abs and Hula girl (does that tie come with real grass?) I wanted to ask the OP - is that a ball point pen one side and fountain the other? Looks like it is, well to me anyway.

79spitfire got it right, a pen/pencil combo from 1935 or so. And I think I read somewhere that Hawaiian grass is better than real.

No, and that's what I get for posting without having a cup of coffee.

New family friendly photo substituted.

Wow -- is it just me? I read "ripple your abs" and *immediately* thought "ebonite".... As in: ebonite pen (in someone's shirt pocket....).

Of course, some day when it's *just* us grownups reading new content I'll regale you with the story about the cover art for one of the bodice-rippers my mom wrote in the 1980s....

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
