Noodler Flex Pen Smell ~ Simple Solution

Watercycle

Recommended Posts

I got one to see how they were and to have something to do at school other than read. :P

But when it came, the thing smelled worse than foot or even my dog's "business".

Solution = Scrape wax from your favorite scented candle, rub that wax all over the pen.

No moisture included in that, then you just wipe off the little particles of wax left over and boom, scented and non-factory smell.

I say this because I literally tried warm water with soap, baking soda, and a few other things with little success.

My nose was stuffed when it came and even then the factory smell was very potent.

Unique solution! I am sure many will find this helpful, as I have heard quite a lot about the pens mean smell.

Thanks for the heads up - i saw an ebonite one I was curious about - but I do not need any funky smelling pens. The ones I have are fine as they are and I am happy with what i have - no need for any new trouble pens.

This is a very common problem with certain resins

The voice of this guitar of mine, at the awakening of the morning, wants to sing its joy;

I sing to your volcanoes, to your meadows and flowers, that are like mementos of the greatest of my loves;

If I am to die away from you, may they say I am sleeping, and bring me back home.

I like the smell; reminds me of the chemistry lab at my old school.

Yeah, as others have said the smell is limited to a couple weeks to a month after receipt. Imagine working in the factory where they make them !!!

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

I dunno about that. I have some samples Nathan sent me months ago, they still smell bad.

So how come mine didn't smell bad? Could it be just certain colors?. FWIW I have the clear, Bumble Bee, and the Pumpkin.

I have the black marbled one and while the waft of the smell has definitely decreased, if I get my nose within 5 inches of it I can smell the weird wet feet/bread smell of it. Not enough to dissuade me from using it, but enough to make me a little reluctant to get another one because I'm scent-sensitive.

I didn't notice the scent go down after a few days so I figured if it takes a couple of weeks (or always smelling to some degree) then there has to be some answer. :P

Actually after baking soda i had to put my nose like 2 inches away to smell it but, still, better cinnamon pen than factory :lol:

It seems to me that the yellow color pens have a stronger smell than darker colors. I have one from the very first release and it still has a slight smell.

The smell reminds me of my grandfathers wood working shop. Makes sense because I bet many of the tool handles were of a similiar plastic makeup.

I personally think the Flex pens smell like wood putty sticks. Mine still smell and I've had my first one since the first batch came out.

So I got my Arizona Flex pen Yesterday :clap1:

A big thank you to the Goulets :thumbup:

Mine smelt more like the old style soap, it was rather strong.

Been using it all of last night (got to bed at about midnight :embarrassed_smile: )

now it just has a feint smell and not anything like it did yesterday, I would say more of a cross between Chocolate and Banana (I was using it with clean hands last night) but all in all, a very pleasent smell and a fantastic smooth writer especially with Noodler's Purple Heart :puddle:

i have mine since the month of july(it was stuck for a month in the mail) and it still smells. it smells a lot less than when new, but it still smells a bit. i don't think it smells that bad though. a bit special, but not bad. my brother, on the other hand, thinks it stinks like hell.

      Thanks for the info (I only used B&W film and learned to process that).   Boy -- the stuff I learn here!  Just continually astounded at the depth and breadth of knowledge in this community! Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

It just wasn't likely to have been Kodachrome.  It would have been the films I referred to as "other color films." (Kodachrome is not a generic term for color film. It is a specific film that produces transparencies, or slides, by a process not used for any other film. There are other color trans

      @Ceilidh -- Well, I knew people who were photography majors in college, and I'm pretty sure that at least some of them were doing photos in color, not just B&W like I learned to process.  Whether they were doing the processing of the film themselves in one of the darkrooms, or sending their stuff out to be processed commercially?  That I don't actually know, but had always assumed that they were processing their own film. Kodachrome 25 was the most accurate film for clinical photography and was used by dermatologists everywhere. I got magnificent results with a Nikon F2 and a MicroNikkor 60 mm lens, using a manually calibrated small flash on a bracket. I wish there were a filter called "Kodachrome 25 color balance" on my iPhone camera.
