Lamy Safari Eyedropper

Recommended Posts

I'm going to epoxy weld the holes in my safari barrel and try to use it as an eyedropper.

Don't forget to fill the holes in the end of the barrel too. I know.

And grease the threads all up.

Let's see how it works.....

Why not just get a roller ball pen in the same color and use that barrel? They seem to be the same size and thread. It should work.

If you are selective in your ink color and brand choices staining shouldn't be too bad...

okay. great comments!

i'm not spending $15 on a barrel. sorry. especially 15 plus shipping. yuck.

second. i don't care if it stains. it's charcoal. and plus i don't look inside the barrel when i'm writing.

and third, i already have the epoxy weld. it was cheap. i've had it for about a year and it's already paid for itself.

i used small bits of masking tape on the inside of the barrel to keep the epoxy out of the barrel. it's looking good so far.

i'll post pics later.

I have a Lamy rollerball and the end of the barrel is open. You can blow air right through it.

Already been done. There was a thread somewhere...

But it doesn't have the two "windows" for viewing the ink level as the fountain pen barrel does. The bottom vent is easily sealed from the inside with a dollop of silicone RTV sealant, but those side holes take a bit more effort, especially if you want the end result to look good. :-)

I hadn't thought of that.

it's not cured yet of course, but it's dry enough. i had to hold it and twirl it and move it for about an hour to keep it from dripping down the barrel. and it looks good. can't wait to pull the tape out and fill it up.

i just hate the lamy carts. it seems like the ink sticks in the back of it and won't come out. or like the one i have in there right now it looks like the ink is stuck in the middle of the cart and no amount of shaking or thumping or tapping will get it to move. it's probably just residue stuck to the sides of the cart, but it's still annoying.

and i've been wanting to do this since i got this pen... and here we go.

You can get the rollerball barrel as a spare part. My Vista rollerball barrel did cost 4.20 € (I'm in Germany, though, it might be pricier and harder to get elsewhere. Lamyusa seems to offer them, AFAIK).

IT WORKS! okay, so there was some trial and error. first time, it leaked out of one of the port holes. popped the epoxy out (with some effort) and redid it. this time i used scotch tape b/c the masking tape left all sorts of adhesive residue. let it cure for a couple days (i forgot about it actually) and this morning loaded it up with noodler's bp black. GREAT!

a little silicone grease on the threads of course.

out of curiousity, just looked at lamyusa.com

20$ - OUCH! I paid 4.20€ for my Vista rollerball barrel. I just went into a store and they even got me a barrel from a complete new rollerball, since they didn't have a spare at hand. Sometimes living in Germany does have its advantages

I love the fingerprint whorls showing in the second picture. It's now truly a personal pen.

Query for those who have bought the RB barrel for this purpose: Does the FP barrel then fit on the RB, or is the refill too big?

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

I have the charcoal Safari in RB and FP, so I tried swapping the barrels. No problems.

the pen had it's first day-long abuse test. carried it with me today to the zoo with the kids on my shirt collar. carried my 18 mo old on my shoulders half the day (it actually took over 3 1/2 hours to see the whole thing!!! awesome!) and he kicked and pulled at me and the pen a bunch, and it never sprang a leak. and i drew with it in my Flexi-Sketch all the way home (a one hour drive but with my lovely wife taking over only about 40 minutes :vbg:)

Did you seal the bottom from the outside? What other methods can you recommend for it?

Mine doesn't. The RB refill is too big because the FP barrel has longer ridges used to install the cartridge. You can't use the FP barrel on the RB, then.

I don't have it anymore - but yes - sealed from the outside with epoxy. I don't know how it's holding up now as I don't have it anymore. Lost it in a terrible trade with somebody who didn't want to hold up their end of things. :P Oh well. I don't miss it - nor would I do this again. What a lot of work!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
